Als "kirchenhistorisches Ereignis" bezeichnete Oktavian Schmucki 1992 in den Collectanea Franciscana den damals erscheinenden zweiten Band (1648-1803) des von Erwin Gatz herausgegebenen Bischofslexikons. Der nunmehr vorgelegte vierte Band setzt mit dem Jahr 1198 ein und reicht bis ins Jahr 1448. Er umfaßt also die Epoche der sich konsolidierenden und immer stärker ausformenden Bistümer bis in die Zeit der spätmittelalterlichen Krise der Kirche und der Beilegung des Großen Abendländischen Schismas. Auch dieser Band bietet in Lebensbildern eine Darstellung von Herkunft, sozialer und kirchlicher Verwurzelung, Bildungs- und Werdegang sowie des Wirkens aller Diözesanbischöfe dieser Epoche. Für die Zeit des Schismas sind nicht nur die päpstlich bestätigten oder bestellten, sondern auch alle Gegenbischöfe einbezogen. Der Band bietet somit für den Zeitraum von 250 Jahren zugleich eine Geschichte der Kirche im Reich unter personengeschichtlichem Aspekt.

Urban histories have emphasized the rise of civic autonomy and proto-democracy. Based on chronicle and archival sources, this volume focuses on German bishops, former lords of the city and fierce opponents of civic freedom. The author investigates how bishops contested exclusion from political, economic, and religious dimensions of civic life (Episcopus exclusus), which culminated in the Protestant Reformation. Four chapters are devoted to episcopal expulsion throughout Germany and the cities of Constance and Augsburg in particular. A remarkable section explores the puzzle of the bishop's civic survival in the later Middle Ages, made possible through episcopal ritual. The emphasis on city, bishop, and ritual will be of special interest to urban historians as well as to scholars of medieval religion, the reformation, church history, church/state relations, and social history.
