Unter den christlichen Apokryphen, die in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten das Interesse der Forschung zum frühen Christentum weckten, spielt das am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts entdeckte Evangelium nach Petrus eine herausragende Rolle. Der Text wurde häufig vor allem wegen seines angeblichen Doketismus und seines Antijudaismus in den Blick genommen, oft wurde auch die These vertreten, er enthalte eine sehr frühe Quelle zur Passion Jesu. Demgegenüber nehmen die hier gesammelten Beiträge von Tobias Nicklas eine andere Perspektive auf das Petrusevangelium ein: Sie diskutieren zum Beispiel bisher kaum berücksichtigte Textzeugen des Petrusevangeliums, entwickeln ein neues Paradigma zur Beschreibung seines Verhältnisses zu den kanonischen Evangelien, vergleichen seine Christologie mit derjenigen antiker Märtyrertexte und bieten differenzierte Überlegungen zu seiner Darstellung von Juden.

Since its discovery in 1886/87 there has been no full-scale English-language treatment of the Gospel of Peter . This book rectifies that gap in scholarship by discussing a range of introductory issues and debates in contemporary scholarship, providing a new critical edition of the text and a comprehensive commentary. New arguments are brought forward for the dependence of the Gospel of Peter upon the synoptic gospels. The theological perspectives of the text are seen as reflecting second-century popular Christian thought. This passion account is viewed as a highly significant window into the way later generations of Christians received and rewrote traditions concerning Jesus.

Das Evangelium nach Petrus gehört zu den faszinierendsten apokryphen Texten des 2. Jahrhunderts. Die Arbeiten des vorliegenden Bandes beschäftigen sich mit der Frage nach der Rekonstruktion seines Textes und damit verbundenen philologischen Fragen, nach den möglichen Kontexten seiner Entstehung und nach Intertexten, die für seine Interpretation bedeutsam werden können. Dabei gelingen zum Teil überraschende, zum Teil kontroverse Einsichten in die Theologie dieses Textes. The Gospel of Peter is one of the most fascinating apocryphal texts of the 2nd century. The studies in the present volume are concerned with the question of the reconstruction of the text and philological questions associated with this, with the possible contexts of its genesis and with intertexts which may be of significance in interpreting it. The result is a number of insights into the theology of this text which are partly surprising and partly controversial.
