The Aramaic Levi Document is a collection of larger and smaller fragments identified in Aramaic, Greek and Syriac. The discovery of Aramaic fragments among at Qumran confirmed its antiquity and it is now considered to be one of the oldest Jewish works outside the Hebrew Bible. It presents surprising ideas about the priesthood, sacrifice, wisdom and ideals of piety. Greenfield, Stone and Eshel, each expert in their field, have for the first time presented this work as a single coherent whole (as far as the fragments allow). As well as the original texts, they have translated the book into English and written an extensive and detailed commentary as well as an introduction. Indexes, Concordances of Greek and Aramaic words complete the study. This book will move the study of this pivotal document to a new level.

This work, edited by Henryk Drawnel, contains the posthumous edition and commentary of the Aramaic Testament of Levi by Józef Tadeusz Milik. The composition of Levi presents the reader with the autobiographical account of the life of Levi, the patriarch of the eponymous priestly tribe in ancient Israel. Based on the available manuscripts from Qumran (4Q21; 4Q213; 4Q214; 4Q540; 4Q548), Mount Athos and the Cairo Genizah, the author of the monograph reconstructs the Aramaic form of the text, including some parts of the Testament Greek of Levi (Test. 12 Patr.), Jubilees and excerpts from patristic literature. The first chapter, written by Henryk Drawnel, introduces the reader to the monograph and presents an overview of Milik's use of the manuscripts in the reconstructed text as well as the general plan for a larger undertaking: publishing. "This book challenges the consensus that the Hodayot consist of leader hymns and community hymns respectively, and it breaks with the habit of interpreting each hymn as expressing basically either leadership issues or ordinary community member issues. Instead it argues that all of the compositions in 1QHodayota were perceived by their owners to express the sentiments of a worshipping community at large, and that the members of this community saw themselves as holding a mediating position in the agency of God. This way, the Hodayot express a theology according to which God acts in the world through the members of this particular community, and the collection of 1QHodayota seems to reflect an emergent socio-religious pattern which is different from that of the Book of Psalms. The book engages in an array of methods, most prominently from the field of sociolinguistics, in an attempt to find more sophisticated ways to approach the relationship between the Dead Sea scrolls, in this case the Hodayot, and their socio-historical contexts"--

This book contains papers presented at a symposium on “Reworking the Bible at Qumran” convened in 2002 by the Institute of Advanced Studies and the Orion Center for the Study of the Dead Sea Scrolls and Associated Literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The core theme is the use and interpretation of the Bible in apocryphal and related works found at Qumran. Nearly half the papers treat legal interpretation; the other half, examines narrative exegesis. Key issues include the question of the authority of the reworked biblical texts, their exegetical techniques, motifs, and genres. This collection provides a valuable resource for the study of Bible, the history of interpretation, apocrypha and pseudepigrapha, ancient Judaism and early Christianity.
