Abstract

Abstract

In The Epistles for All Christians, David Smith argues that epistolary literature offers analogous evidence of circulation to the Gospels. Since Richard Bauckham’s edited volume The Gospels for All Christians was published in 1998, debate over the validity of the contributors’ claims that the Gospels were written for “all Christians” has revolved around interpretation. Smith brings circulation to bear on the conversation. Studying ancient media practices of publication and circulation and using social network theory, Smith makes a compelling case that if the evangelists did not expect their texts to circulate they would be atypical.

Abstract

Prominent biblical scholars engage with Francis Watson's most striking arguments on gospel writing, specifically: the argument against Q but for an early sayings collection; the four-fold gospel rather than four gospels; and the larger landscape of Jesus and gospel reception and interpretation. The contributors ask whether, and in what ways, Watson's reorientation of gospel studies is successful and explore its implications for research. The book is more than a critical review of Watson's work; it carries forward his work with fresh treatments and provides an essential volume for students and scholars seeking to understand the landscape of gospel studies and to explore new directions within it.

Abstract

Introducing the Gospels and Acts is not just about reading the first five books of the New Testament. It requires entering the first century Mediterranean world where the events in these writings happened. In this short book, Alicia D. Myers takes readers on a journey through the Gospels and Acts, introducing them to the world of Jesus of Nazareth and of the believers who composed and shared stories inspired by him. Myers provides overviews of context and major passages in each canonical work, and also introduces readers to the Apocryphal Gospels and Acts to demonstrate the larger phenomenon of early Christian writing. After situating readers in the literary context of the Gospels and Acts, Myers focuses on the writings themselves, giving basic historical background before digging more deeply into a chosen contextual theme for each work. These six themes include the politics and history of Roman Palestine, expressions of Second Temple Judaism, understandings of identity and human worth in the Roman world, hospitality, Hellenistic philosophies, and the process of canonizing the New Testament. Rather than shying away from difficult and often confusing elements of the Gospels and Acts, Myers invites readers to engage more deeply and situate themselves more fully in the strangeness and surprising familiarity of the Roman world. In this way, readers will see the continuing relevance of the Gospels and Acts for today and learn to be responsible readers of these works for years to come.

Abstract

The Gospels continue to defy efforts to fix 'generic' boundaries for determining their meanings. This volume discloses new stirrings and sightings of broader, more heuristically promising literary, rhetorical, and cultural registers which intersect in ancient narrative . The contributors seek to build upon or vigorously critique current generic hypotheses (biography, history, tragedy); to introduce recent insights and developments in genre theory; to probe ancient reception of the Gospels as works of literature; and to illuminate the relations between the literary characteristics of the Gospels and methodological advances in narratology, social memory, intertextuality, and performance.

Abstract

With this volume twenty-seven friends and colleagues of Joseph Verheyden, Professor of New Testament at KU Leuven, celebrate his sixty-fifth birthday and honour him for his outstanding achievements in the study of the New Testament and early Christian literature. The contributions, written by authors from many countries in Europe, Canada, the United States, and South Africa, discuss the origin of the earliest gospels, the Sayings Source Q, various solutions to the Synoptic Problem, and the textual transmission of the canonical gospels. Other essays examine pre-Markan traditions, the traces the canonical gospels have left in the Apostolic Fathers, and the reception of the gospels in non-canonical writings such as the Gospel of Peter, the Apocalypse of Peter, and the Acts of Thecla, and in patristic and gnostic literature. Several papers are detailed commentaries on specific passages in the New Testament gospels, or concentrate on such figures as Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Nathanael. The volume also includes Verheyden's full bibliography 1979-2022.

Abstract

This book offers a new material history of the Jesus tradition. Keith shows that the introduction of manuscripts to the transmission of the Jesus tradition played an underappreciated, but crucial, role in the reception history of the tradition that eventuated. He focuses particularly on the competitive textualization of the Jesus tradition, whereby Gospel authors drew attention to the written nature of their tradition, sometimes in attempts to assert superiority to predecessors, and the public reading of the Jesus tradition. Both these processes reveal efforts on the part of early followers of Jesus to place the gospel-as-manuscript on display, whether in the literary tradition or in the assembly. Building upon interdisciplinary work on ancient book cultures, Keith traces an early history of the gospel as artifact from the textualization of Mark in the first century until the eventual usage of liturgical reading as a marker of authoritative status in the second and third centuries, and beyond. Overall, he reveals a vibrant period of the development of the Jesus tradition, wherein the material status of the tradition frequently played as important a role as the ideas about Jesus that it contained.
