Abstract

This volume contains the proceedings of the 69th Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense (February 1-3, 2021), which focused on new perspectives in the research into the books of 1-4 Maccabees. The contributions explore the relevance of literary approaches to the Maccabean books, either comparative readings that connect the Maccabean books with related ancient Greek, Roman, and Near Eastern writings or narratological or intertextual approaches. The historicity of the Maccabean Books and their provenance and historiography form a second focal point. Several contributions re-assessed the contested provenance of 2 Maccabees and the historicity of 1 Maccabees. Two other new perspectives discussed in the volume concern aspects of the rich Jewish and Christian reception of Maccabean passages and the religious views presented in the four books.

Abstract

The Antioch Bible Series provides both the text of the Syriac Bible (called the ⁰́Peshitta⁰́₊) and an up-to-date English translation. The Syriac is fully vocalized and pointed so that readers at any level will be able to work with it -- from beginners who are just starting to learn the language to experienced scholars who want to work with a vocalized text. On each facing page, an English translation has been prepared by a member of an international (and inter-faith) team of scholars, so that both the Syriac and English can be studied together. --

Abstract

First Maccabees, composed in the second century BCE, chronicles four decades of clashes between Hellenistic Syria and Judea, from Antiochus Epiphanes's ascent to the throne in 175 BCE to the Hasmoneans' establishment of an independent Judean state, ruled by Simon and his sons. In this volume, Daniel R. Schwartz provides a new translation of the Greek text and analyzes its historical significance. In dialogue with contemporary scholarship, the introduction surveys the work's themes, sources, and transmission, while the commentary addresses textual details and issues of historical reconstruction, often devoting special attention to the lost Hebrew original and its associations. Schwartz demonstrates that 1 Maccabees, despite its Hebraic biblical style and its survival within the Christian canon, deviates from biblical and Judaic works by marginalizing God, evincing scorn for martyrs, and ascribing to human power and valor crucial historical roles. This all fits its mandate: justification of the Hasmonean dynasty, especially the Simonides.

Abstract

Abstract

"Chang investigates the articulation of the concepts of priesthood and covenant in late Second Temple period Jewish and Jewish-Christian texts."-- Dongshin Don Chang examines 1 and 2 Maccabees, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and Hebrews to see how the combined concepts of covenant and priesthood are defined and interlinked within various biblical and extra-biblical traditions. The three studies show the interesting and varying dynamics of the use of combined concepts of covenant and priesthood. The articulations of the two entities are shown to reflect, in part, the concern of the Second Temple Jewish authors; how significant the priestly institutions and priesthood were, not only in cultic matters, but also in relation to political and authoritative concerns. Chang's analysis makes clear that some of the Second Temple compositions have pursued ideas of the legitimacy of priestly identities by juxtaposing the concepts of covenant and priesthood from various traditions. Interpretation and representation of certain traditions becomes a way in which some Second Temple Jews, and some members of the early Jewish Christian communities, developed their priestly covenantal identities. It is with an understanding of this, Chang argues, that we can better understand these Second Temple texts
