Die Forschung zur deutschen Sprache in Österreich ist seit Beginn des neuen Jahrtausends durch neue Ansätze gekennzeichnet: An die Seite von Arbeiten in der Tradition der philologischen Dialektologie, der Diskursanalyse im Paradigma der »Wiener Schule« oder auch der »klassisch« korrelativen Soziolinguistik treten zunehmend Untersuchungen auf Basis der sprachdynamisch fundierten Variationslinguistik, der interaktionalen Soziolinguistik sowie der modernen Spracheinstellungs- und -perzeptionsforschung. Der vorliegende Band reflektiert die Dynamik des Forschungsfeldes und nähert sich ihm aus unterschiedlichsten theoretischen wie empirischen Perspektiven an. Im Zentrum der insgesamt neun Beiträge steht dabei der standardsprachliche Pol des »vertikalen« Varietätenspektrums.Since the beginning of the new millennium, research on the German language in Austria has been characterized by new approaches: alongside work in the tradition of philological dialectology, discourse analysis in the “Viennese school” paradigm and “classically” correlative sociolinguistics, there has been an increasing number of studies in the areas of language dynamics-based variationist linguistics, interactional sociolinguistics, as well as modern attitudinal and perceptual research. This volume reflects the dynamism of this field of research, approaching it from various theoretical and empirical perspectives. It is the standard pole of the “vertical” spectrum of linguistic varieties that is central to all nine contributions compiled in this publication.

Human beings have always been specialists, but over the past two centuries division of labor has become deeper, ubiquitous, and much more fluid. The form it now takes brings in its wake a series of problems that are simultaneously philosophical and practical, having to do with coordinating the activities of experts in different disciplines who do not understand one another. Because these problems are unrecognized, and because we do not have solutions for them, we are on the verge of an age in which decisions that depend on understanding more than one discipline at a time whill be made badly. Since so many decisions do require multidisciplinary knowledge, these philosophical problems are urgent. Some of the puzzles that have traditionally been on philosophers' agendas have to do with intellectual devices developed to handle less extreme forms of specialization. Two of these, necessity and the practical "ought," are given extended treatment in Elijah Millgram's The Great Endarkenment. Millgram pays special attention to the ways in which a focus on cognitive function reframes familiar debates in metaethics and metaphysics. Consequences of hyperspecialization for the theory of practical rationality, for our conception of agency, and for ethics are laid out and discussed. An afterword considers whether and how philosophers can contribute to solving the very pressing problems created by contemporary division of labor. -- from dust jacket.

Kenneth Perkins's second edition of A History of Modern Tunisia carries the history of this country from 2004 to the present, with particular emphasis on the Tunisian revolution of 2011 - the first critical event of that year's Arab Spring and the inspiration for similar populist movements across the Arab world. After providing an overview of the country in the years preceding the inauguration of a French protectorate in 1881, the book examines the impact of colonialism on the country, with particular attention to the evolution of a nationalist movement that secured the termination of the protectorate in 1956. Its analysis of the first three decades of independence, during which the leaders of the anticolonial struggle consolidated political power, assesses the challenges that they faced and the degree of success they achieved. No other English-language study of Tunisia offers as sweeping a time frame or as comprehensive a history of this nation.
