Recently thirty-four distinguished German and American historians met in Krefeld, West Germany, to compare the constitutional histories of Germany and the United States. Although the American Constitution had a profound impact on European constitutional thought, the emphasis of the conference was on contextual and concrete historical realities of constitutional thought in both countries. It emphasised dissimilarities as well in an attempt to ascertain relevant factors common to both countries and to explain why their respective developments diverged. The symposium was interdisciplinary in approach, an encounter between legal historians and those specialising in political and social history. The six sessions of the symposium concentrate on a wide diversity of themes : Federalism in the Eighteenth Century, the idea of a Ruler in the Eighteenth Century, Civil Rights and National Unity. Federalism in the Nineteenth Century, Safeguards of Civil and Constitutional Rights, and Constitutions and Change in Industrial Societies. Two papers are included in each session, one by a German scholar and one by an American, each on their respective countries. As well, each session contains extensive comments by other scholars present and a group discussion, providing an in-depth and rounded critical treatment of each theme. Together, the papers and commentary presented in this volume provide new approaches to important areas of historical and contemporary constitutional debate.

Drawing Futures brings together international designers and artists for speculations in contemporary drawing for art and architecture. Despite numerous developments in technological manufacture and computational design that provide new grounds for designers, the act of drawing still plays a central role as a vehicle for speculation. There is a rich and long history of drawing tied to innovations in technology as well as to revolutions in our philosophical understanding of the world. Drawing Futures focuses on the discussion of how the field of drawing may expand synchronously alongside technological and computational developments. The book coincides with an international conference of the same name, taking place at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, in November 2016. Bringing together practitioners from many creative fields, the book discusses how drawing is changing in relation to new technologies for the production and dissemination of ideas.

Since the early nineteenth century, numerous campaigns have denounced the mistreatment of animals. This book compares the British and French histories of the animal-protection movement to retrace its origins and impact up to the present day. As Christophe Traïni shows, the struggle for animal rights - inextricably linked to the rise of philanthropy and established long before the birth of the ecology movement - developed out of several important social and political processes, including changes in sensibilities and socially approved emotions, new definitions of what constitutes legitimate violence, and the influence of religious beliefs.
