In the first part this book investigates the changing paradigms that determine the evolving approaches to religious matters during the nineteenth century, providing readers with a sense of the fundamental changes at the time. Section two considers human nature and the nature of religion. It explores a range of categories rising to prominence in the course of the nineteenth century, and influencing the way religion in general, and Christianity in particular, were conceived. Part three focuses on the intellectual, cultural, and social developments of the time, while part four looks at Christianity and the arts-a major area in which Christian ideas, stories, and images were used, adapted, changes, and challenged during the nineteenth century. Christianity was radically pluralized in the nineteenth century, and the fifth section is dedicated to 'Christianity and Christianities'. The chapters sketch the major churches and confessions during the period. The final part considers doctrinal themes registering the wealth and scope through broad narrative and individual example. This authoritative reference work offers an indispensible overview of a period whose forceful ideas continue to be present in contemporary theology.

Elles ont été emblématiques, ces bonnes soeurs portant longs habits couvrants et coiffes empesées, d'un catholicisme au féminin qui se vivait en plein siècle. Mais personne aujourd'hui n'en revendique l'héritage. Ni les féministes qui ont vu en elles un obstacle à l'émancipation des femmes ; ni leurs familles religieuses qui sont mortes ou qui vivent ailleurs et autrement ; ni leur pays qui oublie combien elles l'ont servi de par le monde. Ces deux cent mille religieuses du XIXe siècle gagnent pourtant à être connues. Par équité. Par désir de comprendre pourquoi elles ont agi ainsi au service de la société. Car elles furent, un temps, l'Eglise catholique, moderne à sa manière, soignant les malades à l'hôpital ou à domicile, tenant des pensionnats et mettant en place le réseau public d'écoles communales de filles. Et les femmes au travail n'auraient point trouvé sans elles la voie de leur émancipation... Les utopies fondatrices dont elles étaient porteuses ont su triompher des pesanteurs de la société : Anne-Marie Javouhey, pour émanciper les esclaves, Jeanne Jugan, pour offrir un foyer aux personnes âgées... Dans un monde contemporain toujours brutal, ces figures d'hier qui s'adressent encore à notre conscience, sont plus que jamais actuelles.
