Abstract

The Byzantine world underwent a remarkable recovery of intellectual energy in the period following the recovery of Constantinople in 1261. The reaction of the emperors and their entourage of well-educated high officials to their political disasters was a deliberate revival of the glories of ancient Greek culture. The main subject of this book is the preservation and dissemination by this learned elite of such ancient literature, philosophy and science as still survived then, the development of editorial techniques which resulted in more complete and less corrupt texts, and their improvement buy the addition of commentaries and other innovations.

Abstract

The present thesis is a study on Greek textbooks used by students and teachers in secondary education in Byzantium. The bulk of the source material belongs mainly to the thirteenth-fifteenth century and therefore the thesis concentrates on the Palaeologan period. It examines methods and techniques used by teachers to inculcate knowledge and the Hellenic tradition to the students, and in addition it explores aspects of composition and copying of textbooks by teachers and professional scribes. Though published sources have been used extensively in our research, the core of the thesis is based on unpublished material preserved in major libraries in Europe. The thesis comprises an Introduction, four Chapters (I-IV) and a Conclusion. The Introduction presents the aim and scope of the thesis, previous scholarship, the methodology adopted and the material investigated. Chapter I discusses the Hellenistic foundations of Byzantine education and examines in a comparative approach the evidence from the Byzantine period. It discusses the structure and content of Byzantine education, innovations and changes brought about as well as elements of continuity, placing emphasis on secondary education. Chapter II examines and analyses the material contained in the extant textbooks dated or datable to the Palaeologan period, in particular schedographies, the principal method used by Byzantine teachers for the teaching of grammar between 11th-1Sth c. Chapter III examines three textbooks containing Homer's Iliad copied by the late fifteenth-century scribe Michael Lygizos, as well as textbooks with Sophocles and Euripides. Chapter IV is devoted to Greek textbooks with scholia in Latin for teaching purposes. The Conclusion summarizes the findings of the research and raises questions for further investigation. Appendices (I-V) contain an editio princeps of Constantine Arabites.

Abstract

"Theodore Metochites, a distinguished figure in the intellectual and political landscape of the early Palaiologan period (1261-1341), was born in Constantinople in 1270. The On Morals or Concerning Education is an extensive disquisition about the significance and status of cultural education (paideia) in the context of Palaiologan society. The oration might also be seen at least partly as an autobiographical narrative exposing Metochites's inner reflections and anxieties. The On Morals belongs to the genre of the protreptikos, a hortatory speech designed to encourage its readers to study philosophy and attain virtue. With the On Morals Metochites sought to establish himself as a continuator of ancient moral philosophy in late Byzantium."--

Abstract

The conquest of the Byzantine Empire by the armies of the Fourth Crusade resulted in the foundation of several Latin political entities in the lands of Greece. The Companion to Latin Greece offers thematic overviews of the history of the mixed societies that emerged as a result of the conquest. With dedicated chapters on the art, literature, architecture, numismatics, economy, social and religious organisation and the crusading involvement of these Latin states, the volume offers an introduction to the study of Latin Greece and a sampler of the directions in which the field of research is moving. Contributors are: Nikolaos Chrissis, Charalambos Gasparis, Anastasia Papadia-Lala, Nicholas Coureas, David Jaccoby, Julian Baker, Gill Page, Maria Georgopoulou and Sophia Kalopissi-Verti.

Abstract

This volume fills the need for a new critical edition and linguistic study of John Kananos' account of the siege of Constantinople in 1422. New research on the manuscripts has produced a new stemma codicum and shown that the oldest witness of this narrative, Vat. gr. 579 (ff. 355r - 364v), was written in Constantinople and belonged to the prolific scribe Phlamules Kontostephanos, who also provided the copy with a title in which the name of John Kananos is mentioned for the first time. The philological approach adopted here explains contradictions among the manuscripts and Kananos' peculiar vernacularisms and reveals a surprisingly realistic and elaborate Greek. The accompanying English translation, a chapter on the language of Kananos, and a complete thesaurus make this volume a valuable contribution to the study of late Byzantine literature.
