Clinical Evidence summarises the current state of knowledge and uncertainty about the prevention and treatment of clinical conditions, based on thorough searches and appraisal of the literature. It is neither a textbook of medicine nor a set of guidelines. It describes the best available evidence from systematic reviews, RCTs and observational studies where appropriate, and if there is no good evidence it says so.Clinical Evidence is intended as a tool for clinicians, and thereby patients, to help them make evidence-based healthcare decisions. Our task is to provide information that is as accessible as possible without undue simplification. We aim to support the partnership between clinicians and patients that lies at the heart of good health care. We are working towards a future in which the information in Clinical Evidence can be personalised and synchronised with the electronic patient record, acknowledging that most interactions between patients and clinicians are complex and that 'evidence' is only one part of the equation.

Evidence-based Medicine (EBM) is feared to become a kind of cook-book medicine that has nothing to do with the traditional skills and ethics. This volume shows the contribution EBM makes and might make to medical practice and health policy. It describes as many viewpoints as possible with a focus on the ethical issues that are at stake in this process. It shows how EBM has developed from an internal medical issue to an instrument for health policy. It is the outcome of the European Project "Ethical Issues of Evidence Based Practice in Medicine and Health Care" and gives insight into the ethical background of the debate on the role of EBM in various areas of medicine, including clinical practice, medical education, medical research, health policy and medical sociology.About the AuthorR. ter Meulen, PhDFull professor & Director of the Institute for Bioethics Department of Health Care Studies, Section Health Ethics and PhilosophyInstitute for Bioethicshttp://www.zw.unimaas.nl/gew/staffresdescr/ruudtermeulen.htmProf. Ruud ter Meulen (1952) is psychologist and ethicist.
