De titel is De Bibliomaan, in 1831 voor het eerst gepubliceerd door Charles Nodier, verteller, bibliothecaris, taalkundige, romancier, en gastheer van zijn legendarische Salon in de Parijse bibliotheek die nog steeds bestaat, die van Het Arsenaal. We hebben lang nagedacht over die slogan. Het geval wil immers dat de hoofdpersoon, Théodore, niets meer geeft om alcoholica noch andere voor de hand liggende geneugten van het leven zoals schouwburgbezoek of modieuze kleding. Théodore geeft nog slechts om één ding: boeken. Hij lijdt aan wat we tegenwoordig ‘boekentunnelvisie’ kunnen noemen. Hij had 30.000 boeken in één huis met zes verdiepingen, maar die aantallen zijn in de loop der jaren in de geschriften van boekhistorici opgelopen tot 800.000 in zes huizen. Hoe zijn stropdas hing, links, rechts, midden, interesseert hem niet meer. Soms zag hij nog wel een dame uit een rijtuig stappen, en dacht hij bij het zien van haar laarsjes dat het leder daarvan eigenlijk ‘verspild’ was. Dat leder ware beter besteed geweest aan boekbanden!

Collectionner implique au moins deux notions contradictoires, selon que l'on parle de la quête d'articles courants ou de la chasse aux pièces de valeur. Le livre se taille une place intermédiaire, étant à la fois d'usage quotidien et/ou objet de valeur. Sa situation au XVIIIe siècle n'échappe pas à cette ambiguïté dans une France, à l'évidence moins alphabétisée que de nos jours. I l ne s'agit pas ici de présenter le livre dans la société de l'Ancien Régime, mais de tenter de retrouver au travers de collections, reconnues par le truchement des catalogues de ventes publiques, sa place, son influence, son prix. Un dictionnaire des collectionneurs retenus, utilement complété par des indications généalogiques et héraldiques, permettra au lecteur de mieux connaîtr e ces amateurs, qui étaient aussi parfois des savants, mais tous des amis des livres.
