"Dichter en beeldend kunstenaar Lucebert was een verwoed lezer. Tijdens het lezen maakte hij aantekeningen in zijn boeken. Die commentaren, onderstrepingen en krabbels - de zogenoemde 'lezerssporen' - bieden een blik in de hersenpan van een van de belangrijkste Nederlandse dichters en kunstenaars van de twintigste eeuw. In 'De zin van het lezen' zet boekwetenschapper Lisa Kuitert Luceberts lezerssporen in historisch perspectief en gaat woordenboekmaker Ton den Boon op zoek naar de invloed van Luceberts lezerssporen op diens eigen scheppende werk. Maia Swaanswijk maakte een overzicht van de 397 boeken met lezerssporen uit Luceberts bibliotheek.0Het boek is verlucht met veel door Lucebert aangestreepte citaten en een selectie van werken op papier waarin hij tekst- en beeldcitaten verwerkte.".

In deze lustrumuitgave van het Nederlands Genootschap van Bibliofielen, blijkt dat lang niet alle verzamelingen hun verzamelaar overleven. Dat kan op het eerste gezicht een droeve constatering zijn, en op het tweede een optimistische. Ongeveer veertig jaar geleden werd bij veilinghuis Beijers in Utrecht een collectie van een verzamelaar geveild. De bezoekers zaten aan een grote tafel met aan het hoofd de veilingmeester. Destijds werd nog tijdens het bieden koffie geserveerd! Nadat een duur boek een nieuwe eigenaar had gevonden, stond plotseling een van de bezoekers op en zei dat het toch een treurige situatie was dat nu alweer een complete verzameling uiteenviel. De veilingmeester zei: “Ik las ßeen korte pauze in om dat eens te bespreken.” Na nog een rondje koffie vroeg hij: “Wie heeft vanavond mede door deze veiling zijn collectie kunnen completeren of in belangrijke mate aanvullen?” Drie aanwezigen staken daarop een hand op.

This book explores a phenomenon in the history of print collecting that has never been extensively investigated: the cutting and pasting of prints in the Early Modern period. The book focuses on the colourful Dutch classical scholar and libertine Hadriaan Beverland (1650-1716). Beverland was banished from the Dutch Republic in 1679 for publishing blasphemous, heterodox, and provocative scholarly texts on sex and sin. Books that dealt with e.g. prostitution in ancient times, original sin as the first act of sexual intercourse, and the sexual lust of women, were considered dangerous to Dutch public morality. In 1680, Beverland fled to England, where his friend Isaac Vossius took him in. It was here that Beverland began cutting (nowadays) costly etchings and engravings and arranging the cuttings into collages. These collages, which again demonstrated his interest in sexual matters, survived in two illustrated manuscripts, now in the British Library and the Bodleian Library (Oxford). This study aims: 1) to reconstruct Beverland’s life in England, primarily concentrating on his interests and dealing in art and books; 2) to map the Early Modern practice of cutting and pasting prints, on the basis of remaining cuttings as well as textual sources from Beverland’s day; 3) to present a comprehensive analysis of the two illustrated Beverland-manuscripts in terms of form and function.
