Abstract

The wide scholarly interests of Scots in the Restoration period are analysed by Murray Simpson through this in-depth study of the library of James Nairn (1629-1678), a Scottish parish minister. The collection demonstrates a remarkable receptivity to new intellectual ideas. At some two thousand titles Nairn’s is the biggest library formed in this period for which we have detailed and accurate records. The collection is analysed by subject. In addition, there is a biographical study and chapters investigating aspects of the Scottish book market and comparing other contemporary Scottish clerical libraries. A short-title catalogue of the collection, giving references to relevant online bibliographies and catalogues, a select provenance index and a subject index complete the work.

Abstract

This volume provides a wide-ranging account of the development and importance of private libraries and book ownership through the seventeenth century, based upon many kinds of evidence, including examination of thousands of books, and a list of over 1,300 known owners from diverse backgrounds. It considers questions of evolution, contents and size, and motives for book ownership, during a century when growing markets for both new and second-hand books meant that books would be found, in varying numbers, in the homes of all kinds of people from the humble to the wealthy. Book ownership by women, and by non-professional households, is explicitly explored. Other topics include the balance of motivation between books for use, or for display; the relationship between libraries and museums; and cultures of collecting. While presenting a wealth of information in this field, conveniently brought together, this volume also advances methodologies for book history, and makes extensive use of material evidence such as book bindings. It challenges received wisdom around priorities for studying private libraries, and the terminology which is appropriate to use. In addition, the list of owners, detailed in the Appendix, make this book a work of permanent reference, alongside its value in advancing book history.

Abstract

The Burgundian author Jean de Wavrin (c.1400-c.1477) has been known to historians for a long time but his work is usually considered derivative and of little importance. Closer study reveals that he had an interesting career, first serving in the Anglo-Burgundian army, then marrying a rich widow and settling down to a quieter life in Lille, where he composed his vast compilation of the histories of England. At the same time he became a supplier of romances to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, and an avid collector of all kinds of books himself. A very unusual draughtsman, whom he almost uniquely patronised, was later named 'The Wavrin master' by art historians. Wavrin's life as a soldier and civilian, ambassador and courtier, is here presented as fully as possible and put into context. His library and his interests are analysed and his own book, its creation, use of sources, purpose and value are discussed, and its often beautifully illustrated manuscripts described and explained. The work is a major study of a neglected medieval chronicler who offers a unique perspective on events in England during the Wars of the Roses and the reign of Edward IV. There is a full index and detailed appendices examining the surviving manuscripts.
