Attributions are central questions in art history. Since the introduction of new examination methods such as radiography, infrared photography and reflectography, conventional art history has undergone major changes. Technical examinations can provide additional arguments for attributing works of art to individual artists or their workshops. However, technical studies often also reveal complex working methods, while new scientific imagery sometimes challenges accepted attributions and instigates reconsiderations of traditional attributions. The XIXth symposium for the Study of Underdrawing and Technology in Painting which was held in Bruges on 11-13 September 2014 was dedicated to technical studies of paintings: problems of attribution (15th-17th centuries). It focussed on the various ways in which technical studies can provide answers to the often complex issue of attribution and will discuss the challenges that art historians face in proposing conclusive theories. This book captures the variety of twenty-four papers presented at the symposium.

The realistic character of seventeenth-century Dutch art seems to suggest that artists painted from life, but they often executed their paintings on the basis of preliminary drawings. Accompanying the international loan exhibition Drawings for Paintings in the Age of Rembrandt, this richly illustrated volume demonstrates the important role of drawings in the creative process. Among the drawings discussed are quick compositional sketches, figure studies, and careful construction drawings. Underdrawings on panel and canvas supports are also studied. Such preparatory studies are juxtaposed with their related paintings in the catalog to provide new insights into this important aspect of Dutch art.

The Symposium XVI for the Study of Underdrawing and Technology in Painting. The Quest for the Original, Bruges-September 2006, was organized by the Laboratoire d'étude des œuvres d'art of the Université catholique de Louvain, in collaboration with Illuminare, Centre for the Study of Illuminated Manuscripts of the KULeuven and KIKIRPA, Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage, Brussels. Articles are on painting of the Low Countries, Italy, France, Germany, Denmark... between medieval and modern times, not only easelpainting, but also bookillumination, painting on glas and ceramics and framing in the Southern Netherlands (15th until 17th c.). Some methodological issues are discussed. Molly Faries accepted to share her experience for an update on equipments for examination of paintings in the Infrared. The organizers had received for presentation in Bruges more interesting papers than they could accept; they include some of them in this publication. The volume also presents a bibliography in the infrared studies for the years 2005-2007

©Electre 2018
