Cet article porte sur les conceptions et les pratiques de la maternité de jeunes mères c'est-à-dire de femmes qui ont eu leur premier enfant au sortir de l'adolescence, au moment de l'« entrée dans l'âge adulte ». Il met au jour le caractère paradoxal de cette expérience, à la fois source de reconnaissance sociale, de valorisation, de prise de responsabilités, mais aussi de repli sur soi, d'éloignement des amis et des amies, d'isolement social. Les explications amenées sont l'adhésion de ces jeunes femmes à la « maternité intensive » (intensive motherhood) et à la maternité comme « chasse-gardée » des mères (maternal gatekeeping).

This study identifies (1) the background characteristics that determine teenagers' risk of becoming single mothers, (2) how family and religious influences temper those risks, and (3) other kinds of influences that further modify risks. Data are for a nationally representative panel of 13,000 contemporary high school sophomore women. Although chances of becoming a single mother depend on individual and family characteristics, those chances can be modified--sometimes substantially--by other influences, including social restraints that emanate from family and church, and other factors that may either reinforce or undermine these controls at home. The strength of such influences varies across racial and ethnic groups. Findings suggest that programs aimed at lowering teen fertility rates should be tailored to specific groups of women, reflecting the particular characteristics and influences that affect them most.

This technical brief, developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), addresses the needs of adolescent and young mothers living with HIV. It highlights the urgent requirement for targeted services and support to prevent maternal and newborn illness and mortality among this vulnerable group. The report provides background data, underscores the disproportionate impact of HIV on young women in sub-Saharan Africa, and underscores the necessity for integrated maternal care and HIV prevention. It is intended for healthcare providers, policymakers, and organizations involved in public health and adolescent care.

Stephanie was amper zestien toen ze zwanger werd van haar vriend Christopher (18). Het jonge paar en ook hun naaste omgeving reageerden positief op het onverwachte nieuws. Maar in de media en elders waren de reacties eerder negatief. Door alle kritiek die ze als zwangere tiener te verduren kreeg, moest Stephanie uiteindelijk zelfs in het ziekenhuis worden opgenomen met ernstige buikpijn. Als remedie probeerde ze alle zorgen van zich af te schrijven in een dagboek. Op 9 juli 2005 werd haar dochtertje lluna geboren, vijf weken vroeger dan gepland. De vroeggeboorte veroorzaakte allerlei medische complicaties, waardoor lluna wekenlang in het ziekenhuis voor haar leven vocht. Ondertussen zijn de gezondheidsproblemen achter de rug en is lluna bij de Planckaerts ‘ons zonneke', zoals opa Eddy haar altijd apetrots en dolgelukkig noemt. En iedereen heeft op het scherm kunnen zien met welke toewijding Stephanie voor haar baby zorgt. Stephanie Planckaert (17) is de bekende dochter uit De Planckaerts, de realitysoap rond Eddy Planckaert en zijn gezin. Schrijven is de passie van Stephanie, die daarmee in de sporen van haar vader treedt. Zoals Eddy schrijft Stephanie glashelder en openhartig.
