Despite the increasing concern for the issue of respect for persons displayed over the last decades by political philosophers, human-right thinkers, social and ethical theorists, a comprehensive treatment of the problem at stake from a historical-philosophical perspective is conspicuously absent. The present collection of essays aims to contribute to the fulfillment of this gap by offering a reconstruction of the seminal passages in the history of philosophy which testify to the evolution of the idea of respect for persons and the rich array of conceptual specifications that such an idea acquires across the centuries.By analysis of pivotal texts of ancient and modern contemporary philosophy, the volume will try to offer an articulated account of respect which, starting from its primeval connection with the search for esteem and the pursuit of human excellence, gradually evolves towards the recognition of the political status of each citizen and culminates into a true politics of human rights.Bringing together the expertise of classicists and scholars specialized in modern and contemporary philosophy, the volume is especially intended for scholars working in the fields of the history of philosophy, ethical and political theory.

La dignité et le respect sont devenus des aspirations emblématiques de notre époque. Dans de nombreux champs, auprès de publics divers mais aussi dans de nombreux pays, de « mourir dans la dignité » aux « indignés », la notion de dignité nous interpelle sans cesse. Mais d'où vient la dignité de la personne humaine ? Sur quoi se fonde-t-elle ? Aujourd'hui, est-elle menacée dans son principe-même ? Son affirmation peut-elle contribuer au respect de chacun dans un monde globalisé qui tend à bafouer l'individualité ? Est-elle pleinement nécessaire à la gouvernance collective des institutions, étatiques ou non, pour construire une société internationale plus cohérente ? Ne s'agit-il que d'une utopie ? Peut-elle devenir une valeur fondamentale de la société française aux côtés de la liberté, de l'égalité et de la fraternité ? À toutes ces questions, le Forum des Bernardins a tenté de répondre pendant deux années, guidé par deux convictions fortes : la reconnaissance de la dignité de chacun va de pair avec le devoir de respect de la dignité d'autrui ; la dignité comporte des éléments fondamentaux invariants, mais elle n'est pas un concept figé. La dignité de la personne est une. Ses incarnations particulières, déclinaison d'une dignité fondamentale de la personne, doivent être chacune défendues contre de nouvelles menaces.

Jean-François Mattei, ancien ministre, membre de l'Académie nationale de médecine et président de la Croix-Rouge française, est d'abord un médecin, spécialisé en génétique. Son métier est pour lui une passion, qui le guide dans ses engagements humanitaires et politiques. Au coeur de son parcours, une réflexion sur ce qui fait d'un homme un être humain : sa dignité, son humanité, entre corps et esprit.
