Contemporary artist Walid Raad (Lebanese, b. 1967) presents Walkthrough, a 55-minute performance in MoMA's Donald B. and Catherine C. Marron Atrium. Walkthrough is part of Raad's ongoing project Scratching on things I could disavow, which examines the recent emergence in the Arab world of new infrastructures for the visual art, art fairs, biennials, museums, and galleries, and how economic and military conflicts affect art, culture, and tradition.Raad has devised five platform stages for the presentation, each with a floor based on that of a different art space, ranging from the poured concrete of a contemporary art gallery to a herringbone wood-parquet motif taken from New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. The artworks on these stages—the exhibition’s galleries—function like props, signaling that the art is just one part in a larger performative project. The performance unlocks the meaning of all of the works that constitute the series.

Lebanese artist Walid Raad is an influential voice in art from the Middle East. Published for his first comprehensive exhibition in the US, this catalogue surveys three decades of Raad's practice in photography, video and performance. Beginning with his groundbreaking project The Atlas Group (1989-2004), to his recent work on the history of art in the Arab world (2007-ongoing), it offers an overview of Raad's career and features his most momentous bodies of work. Raad explores the ways we represent war and history, casting doubt on the veracity of photographic and video documentation. Essays by scholars place Raad's art in the context of contemporary photography and video, as well as art made in Lebanon since the 1960s; provide an overview of Raad's performance lectures; and examine Raad's most recent bodies of work made in the Islamic galleries at the Louvre and Metropolitan Museum of Art, which explore the history, collecting and display of historical and modern art and artifacts from the Arab world and Iran. A special contribution by Raad presents a fictional interview with multiple artists, curators and writers

This eye-catching booklet is published with an exhibition of hybrid wooden objects by Lebanese-American artist Walid Raad at Kunst-Station Sankt Peter Köln in Germany. Raad’s practice spans almost every artistic discipline, from photographs, videos, and lectures, to performances, sculptures, collages, and drawings. The artist’s approach is based on the assumption that artworks are not constants, but rather mutable quantities that change meaning and thus also their form during cultural or physical transfer. For instance, in dealing with the Lebanese wars, he uses the format of a seemingly authentic archive to confront the Western viewer with a society that has lost a unifying narrative.
