Au lendemain de la guerre, Robert Antelme, tout juste libere de Buchenwald et de Dachau et venant d'apprendre la mort de sa soeur en deportation, redige un long article sur le sort a reserver aux criminels allemands. Devant les violences qui leur sont infligees, il declare l'exigence absolue du droit contre l'instinct de vengeance. Il sait qu'il va choquer certains rescapes; mais il ecrit au nom d'ideaux simples: la justice, la liberte et le respect de l'homme . Loin d'etre un simple texte de circonstance, Vengeance ? constitue une reflexion de fond sur la question du droit et de son origine. Sans aucune reference a la notion chretienne de pardon, Robert Antelme enjoint ses concitoyens a renoncer a toute vengeance: meme lorsqu'un homme est legitimement prive de sa liberte, il doit conserver sa dignite. Toute atteinte au respect du a la personne humaine (fut-elle coupable) constitue un acte de barbarie.
