All’interno della vasta produzione letteraria del monaco benedettino Otlone (ca. 1010-1070), una posizione di indubbio interesse è rivestita dalla sua attività agiografica. Tra le Vitae che egli, quasi sempre su commissione e con intenti che oscillano tra il mero recupero filologico e la più impegnata polemica politica, compose, un testo in particolare ha subìto, per quasi dieci secoli, una sorte editoriale avversa e il silenzio, praticamente integrale, degli studiosi: si tratta della Vita sancti Nicolai, agiografia dedicata al grande vescovo e taumaturgo Nicola di Myra (BHL 6126). Essa è stata finora inedita – e si tratta dell’unico caso nella feconda letteratura otloniana – e priva di un’analisi sulle caratteristiche e sulla sua tradizione manoscritta, condizioni che ne hanno fatto per circa un millennio, nonostante una discreta circolazione, un testo largamente misconosciuto se non addirittura, sotto il profilo scientifico e erudito, quasi ignorato. Composta tra il 1056 e il 1062 o poco oltre, articolata in trenta capitoli preceduti da un prologo e tramandata da una dozzina di codici datati ai secoli XII-XV, la Vita sancti Nicolai testimonia la diffusione del culto del presule taumaturgo in Occidente già prima della sua translatio a Bari (1087). Essa si basa, per esplicita ammissione del suo autore, sulla rielaborazione di due Vitae precedenti, con ogni probabilità le più antiche in lingua latina, di difficile definizione e anch’esse prive di adeguati studi critici, e, grazie alla perizia filologica e stilistica con cui Otlone ha assemblato le sue fonti, ha contribuito alla conoscenza di una figura complessa e stratificata, con tratti già noti in Oriente per mezzo di altre tradizioni agiografiche, prevalentemente di lingua greca
