The Netherlands in Perspective offers a wide-ranging contemporary picture of the country occupied by, and shaped by, de Dutch. It describes the various lines along which land and society are organized, and places special emphasis on the ways all these interact.

De lange jaren vijftig liggen ingebed tussen twee perioden die tot voor kort de meeste aandacht van publiek en historici trokken. Aan de ene kant de tijd van bezetting en naoorlogse perikelen, aan de andere kant de spraakmakende jaren zestig en zeventig met hun protestgeneratie en een vloed aan nieuwe sociale bewegingen. De tussenliggende periode lijkt hierdoor traditioneel en onbeweeglijk en is zelfs als kleurloos, saai en truttig gekarakteriseerd. Deze bundel laat van dat beeld weinig over. Er was eerder sprake van 'een stille revolutie', zonder welke de luidruchtige jaren zestig ondenkbaar zouden zijn geweest. Weliswaar bleef de uiterlijke vorm van staat en samenleving nog onaangetast. Op het niveau van cultuur en mentaliteit echter raakten tradities en overgeleverde normen fundamenteel aan het wankelen en werden zekerheden grondig aangetast. Juist op dergelijke aspecten van een breed opgevatte cultuur- en mentaliteitsgeschiedenis van de lange jaren vijftig gaan de hier bijeengebrachte bijdragen systematisch in. De auteurs laten zien in welke sectoren, onder welke groepen en in welke mate zich de komende veranderingen toen al aandienden. Ter sprake komen daarbij onder meer het dagelijkse leven, het seksuele gedrag, de nieuwe jeugdcultuur, de positie van de vrouw, literatuur, wetenschap, godsdienst en de rol van de media, 4e de couv.
