This book comprehensively conceptualises disaster resilience leadership within the macro context of a risk society. Leadership for disaster resilience has gained prominence in the face of global environmental change, and the need for collaboration, integration, and synergy in addressing this crisis is starker than ever. Drawing on case studies from across India, the volume focuses on leaderships of individuals, bureaucratic and political actors, civil society actors, and institutions. It looks at the ways in which disaster resilience leadership can address key challenges through the application of such theoretical perspectives as integrative public leadership, critical new institutionalism, and comparative realisation focused approaches to social justice. It highlights current leadership practices and envisages sustainable solutions to the environmental crisis by emphasising the need for disaster resilience leadership that could bring about systemic and socio-structural change. Presenting fresh perspectives on leadership research, the book will be an essential read for scholars and researchers of disaster management, social work, management studies, development studies, environmental studies, and public policy. It will also be useful for NGOs and professionals working in the public sector and with civil society bodies.

Approaches to Disaster Management regards critical disaster management issues. Ten original research reports by international scholars centered on disaster management are organized into three general areas of hazards and disaster management. The first section includes discussions of perspectives on vulnerability and on evolving approaches to mitigation. The second section highlights approaches to improve data use and information management in several distinct applications intended to promote prediction and communication of hazard. The third section regards the management of crises and post-event recovery in the private sector, in the design of urban space and among the victims of disaster. This volume contributes both conceptual and practical commentary to the disaster management literature.

Natural and environmental hazards research comprises a diverse set of subjects and methodologies and this book is no exception - offering the reader only a small glimpse into the physical and social processes that threaten human interests. Atmospheric Hazards-Case Studies in Modeling, Communication, and Societal Impacts explores atmospheric-based hazards through focused investigations ranging from a local to global perspective. Within this short compendium, the major scales of atmospheric motion are well represented with topics on microscale turbulent transport of pollutants, mesoscale events stemming from thunderstorm complexes, and synoptic scale extreme precipitation episodes. Chapters include discussions on modeling aspects for investigating hazards (pollution, regional climate models) and the forecasting and structure of high wind events (derechos), whereas others delve into hazard communication, preparedness, and social vulnerability issues (tornadoes, hurricanes, and lightning). Although the chapters are quite disparate upon first inspection, the topics are united through their interweaving of both the physical and societal mechanisms that create the atmospheric hazard and eventual disaster.

The crossroads between a more and more populated human communities and their changing environment pose different challenges than ever before. Therefore, any attempt to identify and deliver possible solutions is more than welcome. The book Natural Disasters addresses the needs of various users, interested in a better understanding of hazards and their more efficient management. It is a scientific enterprise tackling a variety of natural hazards potentially deriving into disasters, i.e. tropical storms, avalanches, coastal floods. The case studies presented cover different geographical areas, and they comprise mechanisms for being transferred to other spots and circumstances. Hopefully, the book will be beneficial to those who invest their efforts in building communities resilient to natural disasters.

A ground-breaking study on how natural disasters can escalate or defuse wars, insurgencies, and other strife. Armed conflict and disasters are two key challenges of the twenty-first century. The number of armed conflicts has never been higher since the end of World War II. At the same time, disasters have increased in frequency and intensity over the past two decades due to climate change, urbanization, and persistent inequalities. Providing the first comprehensive analysis of the interplay of natural disasters and armed conflict, this book offers an incisive analysis that explains whether, how, and in which contexts disasters facilitate the escalation or de-escalation of armed conflicts -- as well as whether, how, and in which contexts combatants exploit or fail to exploit these catastrophes. Tobias Ide begins by laying out a comprehensive framework that explains the link between disasters and the (de-)escalation of armed conflict. From there, he presents 36 case studies of earthquakes, droughts, floods and storms in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America. He also covers the implications of COVID-19 on armed conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Nigeria, and the Philippines. Finally, he combines qualitative insights with quantitative data in a unique multi-method design to analyze when disasters facilitate the intensification or de-escalation of civil wars. Catastrophes, Confrontations, and Constraints adds a wealth of invaluable evidence to current debates on climate change, environmental stress, and security, while providing professionals and students with timely data for their own investigations.
