"Conservative nationalist movements generally termed "populist" are on the rise in many countries today. Most oppose immigration and economic globalization, and many appear disrespectful of the rule of law, unless they have power to say what the law is. Some activists and analysts opposed to those movements say the answer is to reject all forms of nationalism. Others call for what they see as better, more egalitarian, inclusive, and law-abiding nationalisms. None, however, have provided much guidance as to how better forms of nationalism, ones that might eventually move the world beyond the inequities of its current systems of nation-states, can be achieved. In That Is Not Who We Are!, Rogers M. Smith builds on his extensive studies of "stories of peoplehood" to offer criteria for constructing better national narratives that express distinctive sense of identity, but that support policies that are egalitarian and inclusive, as well as responsive to many of the concerns of those who feel threatened by recent demographic and economic changes.
