The Frankfurt physician Georg Kloss was an avid bibliophile & a Freemason. In 1835 his large collection of early printed books was sold by Sotheby's in London, as his extra-curricular interests had shifted from incunabula to the history of freemasonry. He went on to publish several scholarly books on the subject, of which this bibliography was the first. Mentioned by Frederick Leigh Gardner in 1911 as 'excellent though exceedingly scarce', it records over 5,000 books, documents & references relating to freemasonry. These date from 1723 to 1835, & many are very rare, having been printed in tiny quantities. Kloss's bibliography is organised thematically, with sections devoted to topics including Masonic history, ritual, rules & regional jurisdictions (notably France), & related movements including theosophy, kabbalah, the Templars & the Rosicrucians.

The nineteenth-century writer and Masonic scholar Kenneth R.H. Mackenzie (1833-86) studied occultism with Frederick Hockley, and met the famous French occultist Éliphas Lévi in 1861. He was also involved in the foundation of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. This extensive encyclopaedia, first published in 1877, is considered to be a classic Masonic reference work. It includes detailed information on the symbols, rites, legends, terms, people and places associated with Freemasonry. Some of the symbols are illustrated and lists of rankings are given, including a 'traditional' list of Grand Masters of England that includes Saints Swithin and Dunstan, Alfred the Great, Sir Christopher Wren (twice) and Charles II. Mackenzie aims in his entries to be critical when relevant.

Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest, most widespread voluntary organizations. With a strong sense of liberation, moral enlightenment, cosmopolitan openness, and forward-looking philanthropy, freemasonry has attracted some of the sharpest minds in history and created a strong platform for nascent civil societies worldwide. With the secrecy of internally communicated knowledge, its clandestine character, the enactment of rituals, and elaborate use of symbols, freemasonry has also opened up feelings of distrust, along with allegations of secretiveness and conspiracy. Freemasonry: A Very Short Introduction introduces the organization, rituals, and symbols of freemasonry, navigating through the prevalent fictions and conspiracy theories. It also sheds light on the participation of women in freemasonry.

This book uncovers the early Jewish, Scottish, and Stuart sources of 'ancient' Cabalistic Freemasonry that flourished in Écossais lodges in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Drawing on architectural, technological, political, and religious documents, it provides real-world, historical grounding for the flights of visionary Temple building described in the rituals and symbolism of 'high-degree' Masonry. The roots of mystical male bonding, accomplished through progressive initiation, are found in Stuart notions of intellectual and spiritual amicitia . Despite the expulsion of the Stuart dynasty in 1688 and the establishment of a rival 'modern' system of Hanoverian-Whig Masonry in 1717, the influence of 'ancient' Scottish-Stuart Masonry on Solomonic architecture, Hermetic masques, and Rosicrucian science was preserved in lodges maintained by Jacobite partisans and exiles in Britain, Europe, and the New World.
