The first chapter provides an introductory overview of research by Dr Kirsty Williamson (author of Research Methods for Students, Academics and Professionals: Information Management and Systems) and this sets the scene for the rest of the chapters where each author explores the key aspects of a specific method and explains how it may be applied in practice. "Paradoxes of Media and Information Literacy contributes to ongoing conversations about control of knowledge and different ways of knowing. It does so by analysing why media and information literacy (MIL) is proposed as a solution for addressing the current information crisis. Questioning why MIL is commonly believed to wield such power, the book throws into sharp relief several paradoxes that are built into common understandings of such literacies. Haider and Sundin take the reader on a journey across different fields of practice, research and policymaking, including librarianship, information studies, teaching and journalism, media and communication and the educational sciences. The authors also consider national information policy proposals and the recommendations of NGOs or international bodies, such as UNESCO and the OECD. Showing that MIL plays an active role in contemporary controversies, such as those on climate change or vaccination, Haider and Sundin argue that such controversies challenge existing notions of fact and ignorance, trust and doubt, and our understanding of information access and information control. The book thus argues for the need to unpack and understand the contradictions forming around these notions in relation to MIL, rather than attempting to arrive at a single, comprehensive definition. Paradoxes of Media and Information Literacy combines careful analytical and conceptual discussions with an in-depth understanding of information practices and of the contemporary information infrastructure. It is essential reading for scholars and students engaged in library and information studies, media and communication, journalism studies and the educational sciences"-- Provided by publisher.

In Media and Information Literacy: An Integrated Approach for the 21st Century, the author argues that media and information literacy professionals have much to learn from one another and that the two fields need to integrate to more fully prepare students for life in the 21st century. This book first considers the separate and quiet different histories of media and information literacy education and then moves on to considering the contemporary environment. It notes how computing power is far more pervasive and interacts more and more with our work, home and personal spaces. Users of digital media are increasingly active and participative in their consumption and this occurs across a range of media platforms allowing for differing patterns of engagement. Moreover, the information produced in our engagements with such differing platforms becomes an asset that is traded between media companies and other organizations. Furthermore, the degree and manner of engagement is differentiated across external social and economic divides and which in some instances are exacerbated by the use of digital media. As such digital media afford new opportunities but present serious challenges to users. This book raises specific concerns over the nature of contemporary and future digital media and suggests that such issues can best be engaged with through integrating media and information literacy and developing a more critically informed position towards media and information literacy. -- from back cover.

The book argues that only through expanding the range of information literacy education taking it beyond just formal school and university education and into homes, friendship networks and workplaces can we construct an effective educational response to information technology in the 21st century.
