Junya Ishigami believes there are many differences between conventional architecture, as an artificial environment, and the natural environment different forms and systems, different degrees of diversity, and different time. Yet the most fundamental difference of them all is scale, from subatomic particles, insects and animals, and the human world, to the global scale and even the incomprehensible vastness beyond our planet. In this book, Ishigami poses questions about how to bring this entire spectrum of scales into the realm of architecture, expanding its concept to embrace fluctuation and vagueness through five themes: Clouds, Forest, Horizon, Sky, Rain.

Lightness, transparency, simplicity, and communion with nature are Japanese architect Junya Ishigami's watchwords. In his architectural masterworks, which he compares to landscapes, he eliminates the boundaries between exterior and interior space. For the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain, Junya Ishigami designed an exhibition that reveals, on an unprecedented scale, his latest research into freedom, fluidity, and the future of architecture. The Fondation Cartier published a book retracing the genesis of the project, including mixed photographs, drawings, models, and all the poetry inherent to Ishigami's work.

Delightfully conceived, Ishigami has chosen to present the projects by his office dissected into 500 smaller illustrations and accompanied by some 150 blocks of text. In so doing, the defining lines of the respective projects are rendered ambiguous, and a vague, abstract image of the whole emerges lending itself to new associations and discoveries. Works, projects, plans, photographs, models and research reveal a sensitive and intriguing architecture from this young Japanese office.

Ishigami's design takes inspiration from roofs, the most common architectural feature used around the world. The design of the 2019 Serpentine Pavilion is made by arranging slates to create a single canopy roof that appears to emerge from the ground of the surrounding park. Within, the interior of the Pavilion is an enclosed cave-like space, a refuge for contemplation. For Ishigami, the Pavilion articulates his 'free space' philosophy in which he seeks harmony between man-made structures and those that already exist in nature

The first time Junya Ishigami made himself known in Europe, with his proposal for the Japan Pavilion for the Venice Architecture Biennale 2008, he was a young an almost unknown architect who had worked for several years with Kazuo Sejima and had not long with his studio junya.ishigami +associates, founded in 2004. In the Venice pavilion, Ishigami filled all the interior walls of the pavilion with delicate a somehow naïf drawings of gardens and decided to build several greenhouses with real gardens in the outdoor gardens of the building. The following year, he finished the Kanagawa Institute of Technology Workshop, and with only two works he was acclaimed as one of the most innovative proposals of the recent Japanese architecture. Forcing the limits of transparency and lightness in the beginning, his latest works explore in a conceptual way the relationships between the built matter and the nature, in works such as the Botanical Farm Garden in Tochigi, a multi confessional chapel in China or the house and restaurant for a chef in Japan, where the exploration of the tectonic merges with the telluric and the nature.

Depiction is quintessential to the conception of an architectural project. Its way of representation also provides insights into the architect's design process. This new book investigates new forms and paradigms of design mediation that have emerged over the last two decades in Japan. It unravels and highlights historical and theoretical aspects and analyses the evolution, convergence, and major trends in Japanese architectural representation. Drawing on rich published sources and new interviews with eminent contemporary Japanese architects, Pictures of The Floating Microcosm elaborates on six cross-functional topics to identify and examine the critical tools used in conception and representation of architecture in Japan today. The book offers an understanding of the underlying techniques and reveals hybrid array of digital and analog tools with a paradoxical objective of imparting a manual effect to a design's expression. It demonstrates how the treatment of light in images is characterised by overexposure and dispersion, and how the graphical limits are either diminished or diluted, giving an impression of a space with evolving outlines. It shows how a pseudo-naive expression of multiple images obliterates the orthodox hierarchy among the architectural elements and how viewpoints used transcend the Euclidean realism and produce an imagery seemingly floating in space. Finally, it looks at the genealogy of traditions, tracing lines of influence and how craftsmanship has changed hands from masters to their students. The characteristics of Japanese representation are testimony to the complex approach of local architects towards a project, questioning and redefining all attributes of space while the undercurrent of tradition continues to have pivotal influence. Olivier Meystre is an architect and works as studio director and lecturer at Ecole Polytéchnique Fédérale de Lausanne, specialising in questions of architectural representation. He researches as visiting fellow at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.
