Die Infrastructure Research Initiative ist Teil der SWA Group, das sich seit seiner Gründung 1957 durch Peter Walker zu einem der wichtigsten und größten US-amerikanischen Büros für Landschaftsplanung entwickelt hat. Internationales Aufsehen erregte u.a. ihre Gestaltung der technisch innovativen Dachkuppeln für die von Renzo Piano entworfene California Academy of Science in San Francisco (2008), die mit heimischer Flora bepflanzt wurden. In the context of rapidly changing cities and towns, infrastructure is experiencing a paradigm shift where multiple-use programming and the integration of latent ecologies is a primary consideration. Defining contemporary infrastructure requires a multi-disciplinary team of landscape architects, engineers, architects and planners to fully realize the benefits to our cultural and natural systems. This book examines the potential of landscape as infrastructure via essays by notable authors and supporting case studies by SWA landscape architects and urban designers, among them the technologically innovative roof domes for Renzo Piano's California Academy of Science in San Francisco, the restoration of the Buffalo Bayou in Houston, and several master plans for ecological corridors in China and Korea. Other projects develop smart re-use concepts for railroad tracks that no longer serve their original purpose, such as Kyung-Chun railway in Seoul or Katy Trail in Dallas. All case studies are described extensively with technical diagrams and plans for repositioning infrastructure as a viable medium for addressing issues of ecology, transit, urbanism, performance, and habitat.

Reality Bytes is a collection of essays by Bart Lootsma, written in the years from 1998 to 2009. "Byte" is a unit of digital information used in information technology and most commonly consists of eight bits. Reality Bytes is also the title of an essay by Bart Lootsma, in which he investigates the relationship between society and architects and town planners. Bart Lootsma, Professor of Architecture as well as architectural historian, critic and curator, is one of the most multi-faceted figures amongst contemporary architectural theorists. He has produced numerous publications, including "Superdutch", an appraisal of contemporary architecture in the Netherlands published in 2000. In Reality Bytes he has now for the first time compiled hitherto (mostly) unpublished texts on architectural theory, on Second Modernism, on populism and architecture, on landscape architecture and on the changing role of architects in society. Reality Bytes ist eine Sammlung von Essays von Bart Lootsma, geschrieben in den Jahren 1998 bis 2015. „Bytes“ – nicht zu verwechseln mit „Bites“ (Bisse) – bezieht sich auf den Mengenbegriff der Digitaltechnik. Reality Bytes ist auch gleichzeitig der Titel eines Essays von Bart Lootsma, in dem er das Verhältnis der Gesellschaft zu Architekten und Stadtplanern untersucht. Bart Lootsma, Architekturprofessor, -historiker, -kritiker und –kurator ist eine der schillerndsten Figuren unter den zeitgenössischen Architekturtheoretikern. Through the example of Riemer Park Munich (G), mechanisms and rules which merge design (abstract construct) and landscape (physical object) and minimize the discrepancy between them are explored. For this purpose, the design process is reconstructed and interpreted as a translation process. The author’s extracts regarding routines and strategies of translating are important for the makers of large public landscapes (experts, institutions) in view of the practical implementation of design.
