This dissertation by Ebba Abate investigates the immunological and clinical impacts of helminth infection on patients with active tuberculosis (TB). The study examines the hypothesis that helminth infections can alter the host immune response, potentially affecting TB treatment outcomes. The research includes a randomized placebo-controlled trial to assess the effects of albendazole treatment on helminth co-infected TB patients. Key findings suggest that helminth co-infection is more prevalent in TB patients than in healthy controls, and it is associated with increased eosinophilia, IgE levels, and regulatory T-cell activity.
