The scholar and philosopher Philo Judaeus born around 25 BCE in Alexandria, blended his knowledge of Jewish law and scripture with his command of Greek philosophy in his influential works, ensuring that he became a subject of intellectual enquiry in his own right. However, James Rendel Harris (1852-1941), a biblical scholar, palaeographer and Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge, thought Philo too 'slenderly prized' in Britain. Harris intended this collection, published in 1886, to bring together surviving fragments of Philo's work. In a detailed introduction, he explains the complicated tasks involved in identifying and classifying these ancient texts, and also points out that this volume is intended to provide a basis for future research on Philo. The fragments are presented in their original Greek, most of them accompanied by a Latin translation. Harris provides notes throughout, and the book continues to offer a valuable resource for biblical and philosophical scholarship.

The only manuscript preserving this collection of letters, in the British Library, is damaged at the beginning, thus depriving us of the author’s name. However, the letters of the Anonymous Professor, a scholar and headmaster of a private school in Constantinople in the mid tenth century, comprise an important source for our knowledge of education and intellectual life in Byzantium in this period. The present edition, which aims to fulfil the need expressed by many scholars for a new, fully annotated critical edition of the letters, attempts to reconstruct the main events in the life of the Professor, along with his educational and, more generally, intellectual pursuits. Full summaries of the letters are provided. Information about the Professor’s correspondents, many of whom belong to the milieu of the imperial court and the church, is presented and examined. The critical edition of the letters together with accompanying notes comprises the core of the book while detailed indices are supplied at the end.

A seminal figure in nineteenth-century biblical textual criticism, Samuel Prideaux Tregelles (1813-75) did much to formalise the emerging discipline. He published this account of his work on the Greek New Testament in 1854. Reflecting on previous editions of the New Testament, he gives a detailed account of its numerous versions since Erasmus and provides an excellent overview of biblical scholarship to that date. As well as discussing Tischendorf's pioneering work in using manuscripts previously neglected by Western scholarship, Tregelles reports the findings of other textual critics, such as Lachmann, Griesbach and Scrivener. He proceeds to describe his own critical methods and collations, bringing clarity to the developing field, and also presents notes on particular passages in the Gospels. This work still informs modern scholarship and serves to complement Tregelles's remarkable seven-volume Greek New Testament (also reissued in this series).
