Le terme de personnage, couramment utilisé par le lecteur contemporain pour désigner la personne fictive, ne lui a pas toujours été familier. Le concept apparaît à la Renaissance et prend sa pleine valeur avec le développement du sujet cartésien. Mais ce sont d'abord les mots d'acteur, au sens d'agent de l'action, ou encore de héros, qui prévalent jusqu'au début du XVIIIe siècle.
