Abstract

Abstract

The crown upon the continuing vitality and popularity of Gissing studies in the final decade of the twentieth century was the publication of The Collected Letters of George Gissing (1990-97). The editors of that mammoth undertaking, Paul Mattheisen, Arthur Young and Pierre Coustillas, had long been an inspiration to the younger generation of Gissing scholars, and their presence at the International George Gissing Conference at Amsterdam in September 1999 explained the success of the encounter between Gissing's older and younger critics. Ever since the reappraisal of Gissing's works began to get under way in the early 1960s through the publication of many new editions of the works and ground-breaking critical studies by Arthur Young, Jacob Korg and Pierre Coustillas, it has become impossible to ignore the high status he now enjoys by rights, which resembles the position granted to him long ago by his contemporaries, as one of the leading English novelists of the late nineteenth century. This collection of essays is remarkable for its emphasis on women's issues addressed in Gissing's novels, ranging from the inadequate education of women to the struggle for greater female independence, within and without marriage. Several contributors seek to define the precise nature and quality of Gissing's achievement and his place in the canon and, in the process, they open up fascinating, new opportunities for future research.

Abstract

This volume is the product of five years' work conducted by the London University Joyce Group on Circe, the longest chapter in Joyce's Ulysses . The essays explore specific, clearly defined themes: ventriloquy, stage directions, England, 'provection,' Circe as a meditation on the problem of totalization, the relationships between Circe and the Irish Literary Theatre, and between the early draft of Circe in V.A. 19 and the first edition text. But the volume also locates discussion within the framework of recent thought about the chapter. The primary features of current thinking on Circe would seem to be a certain scepticism with regard to totalizing accounts of the chapter; increasing attention to its aesthetic and discursive aspects, including the political aspects of its discursive practices; more concentrated reflection on the way in which Circe recycles material from other chapters in Ulysses ; and a growing emphasis on the need to think about the chapter in more plural terms. The essays included here build on such developments to provide an original contribution to recent debate over the aesthetics of Circe.

Abstract

Written across the disciplines of law, literature, philosophy, and theology, Understanding Evil: An Interdisciplinary Approach represents wide-ranging approaches to and understandings of "evil" and "wickedness." Consisting of three sections - " Grappling with Evil ", " Justice, Responsibility, and War " and " Blame, Murder, and Retributivism " -, all the essays are inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary in focus. Common themes emerge around the dominant narrative movements of grieving, loss, powerlessness, and retribution that have shaped so many political and cultural issues around the world since the fall of 2001. At the same time, the interdisciplinary nature of this collection, together with the divergent views of its chapters, reminds one that, in the end, an inquiry into "evil" and "wickedness" is at its best when it promotes intelligence and compassion, creativity and cooperation. The thirteen essays are originally presented at and then developed in light of dialogues held at the Third Global Conference on Perspectives on Evil and Human Wickedness, held in March 2002 in Prague.

Abstract

This collection of essays critiques human rights field missions that were part of large UN and other multinational peacekeeping operations during the period 1994 through 1997. The authors served as human rights officers for the missions, including those in El Salvador, Haiti, Cambodia, Guatemala, Rwanda, and Bosnia. The several chapters trace the evolution of the missions, the role of human rights within the peacekeeping process, and the relationship between monitoring abuses and rebuilding the institutions necessary for a rights-respecting civil society. Future peacekeeping ventures should benefit from the analysis of these operations and from the recommendations that conclude each of the two sections of the book.
