Abstract

High Time Resolution Astrophysics (HTRA) is an important new window to the universe and a vital tool in understanding a range of phenomena from diverse objects and radiative processes. This importance is demonstrated in this volume with the description of a number of topics in astrophysics, including quantum optics, cataclysmic variables, pulsars, X-ray binaries and stellar pulsations to name a few. Underlining this science foundation, technological developments in both instrumentation and detectors are described. These instruments and detectors combined cover a wide range of timescales and can measure fluxes, spectra and polarisation. These advances make it possible for HTRA to make a big contribution to our understanding of the Universe in the next decade.

Abstract

Abstract

In the last century, astronomy, astrophysics, and cosmology have evolved from observational and theoretical pursuits into more experimental science, with many stellar and planetary processes recreated in physics laboratories and extensively studied. This book provides new research in the field of astrophysics. Chapter One provides a review of theoretical and experimental nuclear reaction and decay data for stellar and explosive nucleosynthesis, as well as modern computation tools and methods. Chapter Two provides a brief overview of the Chelyabinsk meteorite which fell over the region of Chelyabinsk city nearby Southern Ural Mountains (West Siberia) on the February 15, 2013. Chapter Three discusses the local entropy equilibrium condition of an ideal gas in a static gravitational field, and its applications to some topics in astrophysics.

Abstract

This 2003 book develops the basic underlying physics required for a fuller, richer understanding of the science of astrophysics and the important astronomical phenomena it describes. The cosmos manifests phenomena in which physics can appear in its most extreme, and therefore more insightful, forms. A proper understanding of phenomena like black holes, quasars and extrasolar planets requires that we understand the physics that underlies all of astrophysics. Consequently, developing astrophysical concepts from fundamental physics has the potential to achieve two goals: to derive a better understanding of astrophysical phenomena from first principles and to illuminate the physics from which the astrophysics is developed. To that end, astrophysical topics are grouped according to the relevant areas of physics. The book is ideal as a text for graduate and advanced undergraduate students as well as a reference for established researchers.

Abstract

Part B of Planetary Astronomy from the Renaissance to the Rise of Astrophysics is the sequel to Part A (Tycho Brahe to Newton), and continues the history of celestial mechanics and observational discovery through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Twelve different authors (astronomers, historians of astronomy, celestial mechanists and a statistician) have contributed their expertise in some eighteen chapters, each of them intended to be accessible to the interested layman. An initial section deals with stages in the reception of Newton's inverse square law as exact. In the remainder of the book a large place is given to the development of the mathematical theory of celestial mechanics from Clairaut and Euler to LeVerrier, Newcomb, Hill and Poincare; - a topic rarely treated at once synoptically and in some detail. This emphasis is balanced by other chapters on observational discoveries and the rapprochement of observation and theory (for instance, the discovery of Uranus and the asteroids, the use of Venus transits to refine solar parallax, the introduction of the method of least squares, and the development of planetary and satellite ephemerides). Lists of further reading provide entre;e to the literature of these several topics.
