Il s’agit dans ce dossier d’explorer de nouvelles manières d’étudier les formes de gouvernance et les ordres qui émergent dans l’Afrique d’aujourd’hui, en particulier dans les zones qui oscillent depuis quelques temps entre guerre et paix. Pour détecter et décrire les ordres émergents, constellations de contrôle social et de conflit, l’ethnographie est une méthode efficace. Il s’agit également d’éviter de placer la violence au centre de l’analyse, et encore d’aller au-delà des oppositions disciplinaires et épistémologiques entre les différentes écoles qui étudient les gouvernances et les gouvernementalités. Les contributeurs tentent de libérer l’étude de la gouvernance de l’emprise de deux dichotomies : celle qui oppose l’État au non étatique, et celle qui distingue la guerre et la paix. Avec cette perspective, on examine ici les nouveaux systèmes de pouvoir qui sont apparus dans diverses régions d’Afrique occidentale, centrale et orientale, et dans la Corne.

What is the cumulative impact of the immense social, economic, and political changes that Africa has undergone in recent decades? What opportunities do those changes present to improve the lives of the continent's citizens?
