Zu den klassischen Kommunikations-Medien gehört auch das Plakat. Obwohl sein Marktanteil innerhalb der Werbebranche gegenüber Fernsehen, Zeitungen und Zeitschriften heutzutage relativ gering ist, bestimmt es doch nach wie vor weite Teile des öffentlichen Raumes. Trotz der zahlreichen Literatur zu diesem Thema liegt bisher keine kurzgefaßte Abhandlung vor, in der das Plakat einmal nicht unter einem einseitigen fachlichen Blickwinkel betrachtet wird. Der Band versucht daher, bei aller Beschränkung auf das Wesentliche, möglichst viele Spektren des Plakats aufzuzeigen. Er verweist auf die spezifischen Merkmale des Mediums und bietet einen Einblick in die Geschichte der Plakattheorien ebenso wie in den Bereich der Plakatforschung. Künstlerische, werbewirtschaftliche, politische, gesellschaftliche, juristische und allgemeine kulturgeschichtliche Aspekte werden in gleicher Weise berücksichtigt wie die Frage nach Technik und Vertrieb des Plakats unter historischen wie aktuellen Gesichtspunkten. Die Betrachtung ausgewählter Gattungen ist ein weiteres Anliegen: Am Beispiel des Warenplakats, des politischen Plakats und des Filmplakats werden die medialen Bedingungen konkretisiert. Ein kurzer Abriß der allgemeinen Plakatgeschichte schließt den Band ab, der durch ein vielfältig ausgerichtetes Literaturverzeichnis komplettiert wird.
