L’extension progressive de l’autorité pontificale en Dalmatie a profité de la longue histoire romaine de cette ancienne province impériale. Les sources révèlent d’abord les ambitions, les contradictions et les échecs de la papauté dans cette région perçue comme une porte d’entrée vers l’espace byzantin, les Balkans et l’Europe centrale. Ce n’est qu’aux Xe-XIe siècles, au moment où se redéfinissent les sphères d’influence dans l’Adriatique, qu’apparaissent les différents volets d’une diplomatie cohérente (légende d’apostolicité attribuant l’évangélisation de la Dalmatie à un disciple de saint Pierre ; obligation de la liturgie latine ; diffusion de l’art roman ; ambassades et correspondances apostoliques ; conciles sous l’autorité de la métropole de Split ; expansion bénédictine sous l’influence de l’abbaye du Mont-Cassin ; collaboration avec la dynastie croate). Le serment de fidélité du roi croate Zvonimir au pape Grégoire VII en 1075, aux portes de l’antique Salone, illustre un volet régional de la réforme « grégorienne » qui renforça la primauté pontificale et le royaume dalmato-croate. Mais il nous invite surtout à décentrer le regard, à varier les échelles, du local à l’universel, pour mieux saisir la nature politique de cette réforme globale qui inaugure un nouveau rapport au monde.
