Pendant plus de cinq cents ans, les souverains anglais se sont arrogés le titre de "roi et reine de France". Les diverses causes qui ont conduit les deux royaumes belligérants - France et Angleterre - à s'affronter pendant plus d'un siècle ont donné naissance à un conflit d'une grande complexité que l'on a appelé, bien plus tard, la guerre de Cent Ans. Les protagonistes en sont nombreux. Parmi eux figurent des prédicateurs, hommes d'église dévoués à la cause du roi Édouard III Plantagenêt, souverain charismatique et glorieux, du moins pendant la première phase de la guerre, celle qui s'étendit de 1337 à 1360 et qui compte plusieurs victoires marquantes pour les Anglais : Crécy, la reddition de Calais, Poitiers, et enfin la signature du traité de Brétigny-Calais, qui confirma la supériorité militaire ainsi que l'expansion territoriale du souverain d'Angleterre. Les sermons pro rege - pour le roi - témoignent du soutien inconditionnel apporté par l'Église anglaise au souverain dans ce qu'il appelait lui-même sa "juste querelle" avec son adversaire de France. Ces sermons qui ont franchi l'épreuve du temps pour nous parvenir méritent le qualificatif de "propagande", même si le vocable n'avait pas encore fait son apparition dans le vocabulaire usuel.Le présent ouvrage étudie cette forme particulière de propagande pratiquée dans des sermons qui, a priori, étant donné le contexte religieux du XIVe siècle, auraient dû se cantonner aux exigences techniques définies par les conciles ecclésiaux. Le livre s'attache à l'examen des textes pour en faire ressortir tous les traits qui démontrent d'une part une volonté propagandiste, que sous-tendent des raisons diverses mais également un art oratoire hautement raffiné, dans la mesure où il permet aux orateurs d'accomplir leur devoir pastoral tout en martelant leur message de soutien et d'appel à la prière pour le souverain dans le but de s'attirer la grâce du Tout-Puissant et donc, du moins à leurs yeux, la victoire contre l'ennemi. Les sermons pro rege nous replacent au cœur de la guerre de Cent Ans et nous offrent une vue complexe et différenciée du discours pratiqué par ceux qui étaient censés détenir la vérité et donc la dispenser du haut de leur chaire.

Mariners made a major - but neglected - contribution to England's warfare in the middle ages. Here their role is examined anew, showing their importance. During the fourteenth century England was scarred by famine, plague and warfare. Through such disasters, however, emerged great feats of human endurance. Not only did the English population recover from starvation and disease but thousands of the kingdom's subjects went on to defeat the Scots and the French in several notable battles. Victories such as Halidon Hill, Neville's Cross, Crécy and Poitiers not only helped to recover the pride of the English chivalrous class but also secured the reputation of Edward III and the Black Prince. Yet what has been underemphasized in this historical narrative is the role played by men of more humble origins, none more so than the medieval mariner. This is unfortunate because during the fourteenth century the manpower and ships provided by the English merchant fleet underpinned every military expedition. The aim of this book is to address this gap. Its fresh approach to the sources allows the enormous contribution of the English merchant fleet to the wars conducted by Edward II and Edward III to be revealed; the author also explores the complex administrative process of raising a fleet and provides career profiles for many mariners, examining the familial relationships that existed in port communities and the shipping resources of English ports.
