Abstract

Mexican Americans make up the largest minority in Idaho, yet they seemingly live in a different world from the dominant Anglo population, and because of pervasive stereotypes and exclusive policies, their participation in the community's social, economic, and political life is continually impeded. This unique ethnographic study of a small Idaho community with a large Hispanic population examines many dimensions of the impact race relations have on everyday life for rural Mexican Americans.

Abstract

Distributed by the University of Nebraska Press for Caxton PressIdaho is a state with many varied interests vying for political control. Whether it be in the politically liberal north, the staunchly conservative southeast or the rapidly changing southwest of the state, the social and political factors that determine who gains power in the Gem state often flies in the face of logic and makes for an interesting study in contrasts.

Abstract

Distributed by the University of Nebraska Press for Caxton PressAs a teenager, Cecil Andrus dropped out of college after his first year and drove off with his girlfriend to get married in Reno. The year was 1949. Twenty years later, now a Korean War navy veteran, still married and with three daughters the gypo-logger-turned-industrial-accident-insurance-salesman and veteran state senator from Orofino was elected to the first of four terms as Idaho's governor-a record unlikely ever to be equaled. Andrus, however

Abstract

Using a wide range of materials that include memoirs, oral interviews, poetry, legal cases, letters, government documents, and even road signs, Robert Hayashi illustrates how Thomas Jefferson's vision of an agrarian, all white, and democratic West affected the Gem State's Nez Perce, Chinese, Shoshone,Mormon, and Japanese residents. Starting at the site of the Corps of Discovery's journey into Idaho, he details the ideological, aesthetic, and material manifestations of these intertwined notions of race and place. As he fly-fishes Idaho's fabled rivers and visits its historical sites and museums
