Muhsin al-Amīn was born in Šaqrā’, a village of Ğabal ‘Āmil (South Lebanon today). In 1901, he settled in Damascus, where he came to be regarded as one of the spiritual leaders of the Sī’ī community in Bilād al-Sâm. Amīn established there a religious school, he undertook the organization of worship and produced numerous works. His primary aim was to reform society, to increase its conformity to the law, as well as its capacity to face the challenges of European modernity. This life story is taken from Amīn's monumental bio-bibliographical dictionary, A ‘yān al-šī‘ā. It pictures the steps of a scholar in the quest of knowledge, brings forward several aspects of Amīn's teaching, and gives evidence of the turbulence of his times. This book gets its specific flavour from the telling of small incidents and of everyday practices — rural in Ğabal ‘Āmil, urban in Nağaf and Damascus — that Amīn experienced himself.
