Far from theoretical dogmatism, the various contributions to this book are not in search of a hypothetical "female writing", but on the other hand pose questions about practice, representation and discourse of travelers in the nineteenth century, when the status of women in society is beginning to debate how and if these women contribute to construct their identity through travel, even though it remains overwhelmingly the preserve of the male? What models do they convey or transgress them, in their behavior or in their writings? What look do they wear on the countries they visit, and particularly on the condition of Eastern? The answers to these questions will in turn inform the cultural history of a Europe that is reconfigured through the blurring of boundaries and hierarchies.
