Education for sustainable development is presently a relevant topic in the policies of international organisations (such as UN/UNESCO and the European Union) and in national contexts such as Poland and Portugal. Within the policies implemented, civil society organisations and social movements undertake (adult) education for sustainable development projects and activities that have an important impact by raising awareness and promoting changes in the behaviour and attitudes of both countries’ populations. However, several challenges can be pointed out regarding the implementation of these initiatives. These challenges will be highlighted in this article, which focuses on the comparison of policies and practices implemented in Poland and Portugal.

How can the relationship between Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and other defining social issues such as social inequality, inclusion and digitalisation be determined? The authors present well-founded overviews as well as current empirical research from various academic disciplines on these and other aspects of ESD.

The boundaries between science, politics and society are fluid and are constantly being reestablished. This volume is dedicated to this topic, bringing together contributions from the annual conference of the Section for Intercultural and International Comparative Education 2021 (SIIVE) in the German Society for Educational Science (DGfE). It opens up theoretical and empirical perspectives on boundary treatments, takes stock of boundary treatments, focuses on methodological-methodological challenges and works on borders.

Education for sustainable development should enable people to think and act in a way that is fit for the future - in the face of challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity, poverty and inequality. How can different disciplines address this task? In this volume, academic interdisciplinary contributions from philosophy, social sciences and education are complemented by transdisciplinary contributions from practical fields (e.g. museum education, journalism). The current contributions provide impulses for reflection and open up spaces for thinking in order to do justice to the complexity of the task of socio-ecological transformation.

University graduates face a multitude of challenges after graduation – including sustainability-related requirements in professional practice. But what should sustainability competence enable them to do in professional practice? What is the role of higher education institutions in the provision of sustainability-related study programmes? Corinne Ruesch Schweizer explores these questions, which are mostly discussed in normative terms, in a qualitative-empirical study and thus not only provides a sound basis for curricular decisions and reflections in higher education for sustainable development, but also makes a long-demanded specification of the concept of sustainability competence. Wozu soll Nachhaltigkeitskompetenz Hochschulabgänger*innen in ihrer beruflichen Praxis befähigen?

Sustainability is an urgent developmental task for our society and is attracting increasing attention. Therefore, higher education institutions (HEIs) are also called upon to deal theoretically, conceptually, methodically, critically, and reflectively with the associated challenges and the processes and conditions of transformation in order to contribute to sustainable development. How can complex organisations such as HEIs succeed in initiating and maintaining the process of sustainable development within their own institutions and make it a permanent responsibility? How can as many protagonists as possible be persuaded to get involved in sustainable development? This book deals with the promotion of sustainable university development and provides an overview of how universities can be organised sustainably and how sustainable development can be implemented in their various functional areas. In the sense of a “whole-institution approach”, which encompasses entire HEIs, the focus is not only on the core areas of teaching (higher education for sustainable development) and research (sustainability in research) but, also, on the operational management of HEIs. In addition, this book focuses on sustainability governance and transfer for sustainable development at HEIs as cross-disciplinary issues.
