Housing has become a key concern in most parts of today's world, putting social housing again at the centre of public debate. However, it is not clear what the 'social' in social housing actually means. This book sets out to increase our knowledge about social housing and stimulate an ongoing discussion about what the social refers to (or is meant to refer to). The book invites you on a journey across continents and concepts, offering up a kaleidoscope of social, political, and cultural realities. Twenty short essays, based on case studies from around the world, describe and illustrate the social life in social housing. Ten theoretical chapters, written from the perspective of different disciplines, reflect on the global challenges behind the local responses which the cases represent: migration and mobility, issues of social inequality and social justice, changing household patterns, family re)constructions, new technologies, and care arrangements. Simon Güntner is a professor of spatial sociology, TU Wien. Juma Hauser is a conceptual artist and designer based in Vienna. Judith M. Lehner is an architect and urban researcher at the Research Centre for New Social Housing, TU Wien. Christoph Reinprecht is a professor of sociology, University of Vienna.

Almost all of the seven texts of this anthology revolves around this same topic: drawing. There are subtle variations in the inception and focus of each of the seventeen texts but, as a whole, the book can be read as a continuous monologue that keeps going back to that same core idea, almost compulsively. Flores & Prats believe in the capacity of drawing by hand to generate multiple and complex strata of knowledge about a space or a place, so they use it to guide the successive steps in their design process. Their obsession on drawing, though, is a form of optimistic resistance, believing that the tools of architectural representation, if used with intensity, rigour and passion, can still help us decipher the world that surrounds us.

After its golden age in the last decades of the 20th century, diagramming is still an experimental practice today, but it focuses on the synthesis of complexity and on new disciplinary territories on the edge between humanities, art, architecture, urban planning and landscape. This manual presents experimental diagrams through sensing, analysing and transforming space. The contributions critically delineate diagrammatic behaviours in architectural history, present the design practices of offices such as AZPML and MVRDV, take the medium to its extreme consequences, and outline future trajectories.

The cave - both as a physical space and a metaphor - is a provocation to test the limits of contemporary architecture. It invites new thinking about how architecture can adapt to a more community-focused, ecologically sensitive, low-carbon future. This publication and the accompanying sixth exhibition in The Architect's Studio series at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art are dedicated to the Kenyan architects Cave_bureau. In it, Stella Mutegi and Kabage Karanja from Cave_bureau describe eight of their projects. Stunning visuals are accompanied by essays poignantly asking questions about the future of architecture in the age of the Anthropocene, the effects of colonial extraction, the erasure on African architecture and the specificity of continents and geographic spaces.
