Abstract

This book addresses a broad array of pressing challenges of longitudinal surveys and provides innovative solutions to methodological problems based on the example of the NEPS. It covers longitudinal issues such as sampling, weighting, recruiting and fieldwork management, the design of longitudinal surveys and the implementation of constructs, conducting competence tests over the life course, effective methods to improve and to maintain the highest level of data quality, data management tools for large-scale longitudinal surveys, the dissemination of research data to heterogeneous scientific communities, as well as establishing a long-term public relations and communications unit integrating a study’s stakeholder community over time. Abstract

The contributions to the open access volume are comprehensive summaries of important research findings from the two comprehensive interdisciplinary longitudinal studies BiKS-3-18 and BiKS-8-18 conducted by the research unit "BiKS" (“Educational Processes, Development of Competencies, and Formation of Educational Decisions”) funded by the German Research Foundation. The aim of the book is to present selected important findings from these comprehensive longitudinal educational studies; in addition, the edition also aims to provide an overview of the design and measurements of the two surveys. The editors Professor Dr. Sabine Weinert is Emerita of Excellence at the Graduate Centre Trimberg Research Academy (TRAc) and former Chair of Psychology I - Developmental Psychology at the University of Bamberg. Professor Dr. Hans-Günther Rossbach is Emeritus of the Chair of Early Childhood Education at the University of Bamberg. Dr. Jutta von Maurice is Head of the Center of Study Management at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi), Bamberg.
