This atlas is designed to assist all who are involved in diagnosing and treating oral diseases. Individual chapters focus on lesions and disorders of the oral mucosa, soft tissues (including the minor salivary glands), lips, tongue, gingiva, palate, and jaw bones (odontogenic and non-odontogenic lesions). In addition to the more common diseases, less frequent disorders are also covered, some of which have been recognized only in recent years. Throughout, the approach is practice oriented, with concise text and an abundance of high-quality clinical, radiographic, and, where appropriate, histopathologic images. The combined training of the author in oral surgery and oral pathology means that he has exceptional expertise in both the diagnosis and the treatment of oral diseases. His detailed knowledge and experience are fully reflected in the Atlas of Oral Diseases, which will be very helpful for dental and medical professionals in their daily practice.

Aandoeningen in en rond de mond komen onder meer voor op het mondslijmvlies, de speekselklieren, in het kaakbot, op de tong, het gehemelte en de lippen. Door deze verscheidenheid vormen deze periorale aandoeningen het werkterrein van zowel tandartsen, huisartsen, mondhygiënisten als specialisten. Deze Atlas mond- en kaakziekten biedt al deze professionals een onmisbaar, praktijkgericht overzicht van de pathologie van het mondgebied. De atlas beschrijft kernachtig en puntsgewijs een scala aan onderwerpen, zonder uitputtend te willen zijn. Het inleidende hoofdstuk gaat in op het mondonderzoek, de proefexcisie en de verwijzingsprocedure. Vervolgens komen gangbare aandoeningen van het mondslijmvlies, de tong en het tandvlees aan de orde. Het hoofdstuk over aandoeningen van het kaakbot besteedt aandacht aan aandoeningen die van het bot uitgaan of die door het gebit worden veroorzaakt. Deze tweede druk is uitgebreid met een hoofdstuk over aandoeningen van het gehemelte. Het hoofdstuk over afwijkingen aan de lippen is toegevoegd naar aanleiding van reacties uit het veld. Ook voorheen minder bekende of onbekende aandoeningen, zoals bisfosfonaatgerelateerde osteonecrose van het kaakbot, komen aan bod. op verzoek van pathologen zijn verscheidene microscopische afbeeldingen toegevoegd. Wat onveranderd is gebleven, is de uitmuntende kwaliteit van de klinische, röntgenologische en histopathologische opnames. This book gives a comprehensive overview of the symptoms, causes and treatment of Burning Mouth disease and Burning Mouth-like diseases. Burning mouth disease (BMD), also referred to as burning mouth syndrome, is an enigmatic disease for both the patient and the clinician. When the disease is not recognized as such, the patient may become exposed to a wide variety of redundant treatments, including dental and surgical procedures. The text is science-based including literature from the past decades as well as practice-oriented containing treatment guidelines established on personal experience from the author. Much attention is paid to the symptoms of various diseases that may mimic those of BMD. Neurologic and psychogenic aspects are well covered, as are the many treatment modalities, such as pharmacological and nonpharmacological ones. Step-by-step approaches are outlined in this book to help make an apparently unbearable disease more or less acceptable to live with.
