This thesis is a cross-national study that investigates whether people perceive welfare state outcomes differently from welfare state expectations and what individual-level characteristics and country-level characteristics contribute to the several dimensions of welfare state support in Europe. Using European Social Survey data, it is found that people tend to have different attitudes towards economic and moral outcomes of the welfare state, and towards the social outcomes and government responsibility. The findings prove that in most European countries the positive social outcomes outweigh the negative economic and moral outcomes. Overall, people tend to be supportive of a strong role of the government. Using multilevel analysis, findings suggest that the main individual-level determinants for welfare state support are related to beliefs, rather than to self-interest. The structural characteristics of the population influence the four dimensions differently in terms of effect. Country-level determinants such as quality of government have an insignificant effect, and only social expenditure was found to be a relevant predictor of support for the social outcomes of the welfare state.
