De kunsten hebben in Nederland en Vlaanderen jarenlang geprofiteerd van stijgende overheidssubsidies, maar door de financiële crisis kwam daar een abrupt einde aan. Overheden en kunstinstellingen zijn daarom genoodzaakt nieuwe beleidsstrategieën te ontwikkelen. Hiervoor zijn economische inzichten noodzakelijk. Tot op vandaag zijn er echter amper beleidsrelevante kunsteconomische studies verschenen, met als gevolg dat de sector openlijk te kampen heeft met een geloofwaardigheidsprobleem.Dit inspireerde de auteurs om zelf onderzoek te doen en een theoretisch kader te ontwikkelen waarop overheden en andere instellingen hun beleid kunnen baseren. Analyse van de effectiviteit van de verschillende beleidssystemen bracht grote tegenstellingen en opmerkelijke conclusies aan het licht. De discussies over de huidige bezuinigingen in de kunst worden al te vaak gedomineerd door emoties. Voorstanders wijzen op het beschavingsargument, tegenstanders spreken van verslavingsgedrag. Dit boek wil inzichten aanreiken die besturen helpen om hier bovenuit te stijgen, zodat de kunsten versterkt uit deze crisis komen.
