This book presents a study of cooperatives as a two-layer entrepreneurial model, and analyzes cooperative enterprises. Above all, it explores how inducements (from the firm) and contributions (from its members, in their respective roles) are aligned, and seeks to answer the question of what this means for managing each cooperative as a firm as well as a group. The book is divided into three parts, the first of which begins with an analysis of specific aspects of cooperative enterprises, with a focus on the added value of cooperation, the weighing of interests, and a behavioral perspective on the imminent communities and their goals. In a structured approach, the book examines the various facets of relationships in cooperatives on a transactional, financial and control level. Further, a case study on the Dutch cooperative Rabobank illustrates what happens when members fail. In turn, part two concentrates on integrating the lessons learned with the existing economic literature on cooperatives, so as to contribute to a theory of cooperative management. Finally, the book links the theoretical approach to practice: in the third part, it reports on the outcomes of using a computerized simulation game to show members of cooperatives how to manage their business and the cooperative business at the same time, enabling them to understand and actively practice two-level entrepreneurship.

Prettige leesbare, soepele vertaling in helder proza van een flink aantal fabels op naam van Aisopos (6e eeuw v.Chr.), Griekse grootmeester van het genre. Een rijk boek voor oud en jong. Vele bekende fabels uit de Europese traditie kom je hier in hun oorspronkelijke vorm tegen: de raaf en de vos, de leeuw en de dankbare muis bijv. maar ook betrekkelijk onbekende, zoals Demades de redenaar, die bij een politieke meeting de aandacht trekt middels een (niet voltooide) fabel. Sommige teksten geven niet eens een verhaaltje, maar lijken alleen een dier te beschrijven, bijv. de bever. Kortom: echt een boek voor gezellige uren leesplezier. De vertaler, classicus Hein L. Van Dolen, heeft zijn sporen allang verdiend met zijn geslaagde Herodotos-vertaling en met diverse andere boeken over thema's uit de oudheid. Bij vrijwel elke fabel heeft hij op speelse wijze een eigen 'moraal' toegevoegd, vaak bekende hedendaagse gemeenplaatsen. Het boek is schitterend verlucht met 32 bladzijden uit een middeleeuws manuscript: de oorspronkelijke Griekse tekst met verbluffend mooie miniaturen. Een essay van fabelkenner Gert-Jan van Dijk, Over Aisopos en het genre van de fabel, rondt het boek waardig af. Herziene en aangevulde herdruk van de gelijknamige uitgave uit 1997. (G. Berveling) Aisopos (circa 620 tot 560 v.Chr) is de schepper en de grootmeester van de Griekse fabels. Deze gebochelde analfabeet en slavenzoon heeft een schat aan wijze en hoogst originele levenslessen nagelaten aan de hand van eigenaardigheden van vooral dieren, maar ook van mensen en zaken. Voor de oude Grieken waren de Aisopische fabels een bron van vermaak en inspiratie. De korte, moralistische vertellingen werden gebruikt door redenaars om de aandacht van het gehoor te trekken en de discussie over ethiek te openen. In de christelijke tijd werden de zedenlessen die elke fabel afsluiten, benut door geleerden en monniken. De laatsten maakte bij het kopiëren hun eigen variant en vlochten zelfs Bijbelspreuken in.
