Summary: The built environment is becoming increasingly controlled by technological intelligence, while we, paradoxically enough, are becoming ever more estranged from the whole point of computerization, which now prescribes our everyday reality. In an attempt to narrow this divide, Daan Roosegaarde's remarkable works of art function as a documentation of the dynamic relations between architecture, people and e-culture. His sculptures embody an environment of 'tactile high-tech' in which the visitors and the space become one. The connection that is established between design and content, between ideology and technology, results in what Roosegaarde calls 'techno-poetry'.This publication presents a complete overview of Roosegaarde's work, which has been shown at the Tate Modern and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and at the National Museum in Tokyo, as well as in public spaces in The Hague and Rotterdam.

The exhibition examines the roots of the Gothic, which reach down into traditional European art history as well as alternative and popular culture. Visitors will discover a rich survey of objects and art from collections including those of the Kröller-Müller Museum, the Musée d'Orsay, the Hamburger Kunsthalle and the Royal Institute of British Architects. The works on display vary from design drawings by Pierre Cuypers and objects by A.W.N. Pugin to furniture by André Lassen and H.R. Giger; prints by Odilon Redon and Félicien Rops to the photographs of Nona Limmen; from nineteenth-century mourning jewellery to the couture of Linda Friesen and Marjolein Turin; and sculptures by Sarah Bernhardt and Emmanuel Frémiet to the contemporary art and design of Sruli Recht, Carolein Smit and Cindy Wright. This is the first monograph on the Dutch interior architect and industrial designer Rob Parry (b. 1925). His best-known design is the red and grey postbox, which he developed together with Emile Truijen. But this is just one project in an extensive body of work comprising furniture, typography, interiors, exhibitions and architecture, all in a contemporary style, appropriate to a prosperous welfare society in the making.
