Twenty years worth of drawings accompanied a collection of models and photographs that document fifty competition entries. Chests of drawers made from oriented strand board displayed the models alongside working drawings, construction photographs and additional sketches : the exhibition on the 2011 Pritzker Prize winner Eduardo Souto de Moura named “Competitions 1979-2010” is a tribute to a specific design approach and working method. It is also the first exhibition taking place at Oporto Architecture School (FAUP) concerning the works of a former student and professor. Instead of focusing on built projects and shiny photographs of the final product, the idea of the organisers André Campos and Pedro Guedes de Oliveira was to reveal the intense and sometimes obsessed working process behind this architect “ouvre”. As we can read in the intro of the exhibition book, we are dealing here “with an informed architecture, produced with conceptual accuracy, commitment, engagement, just like a scientist who searches for a solution and an artist who knows precisely the path he does not want to take.”

Contemporary Portuguese architects include a sizeable number of talents who have been influenced by the personality of Alvaro Siza, but have also pursued their own design research: one of them is Eduardo Souto de Moura (1952). This monograph, the result of a reordering of the studio archives in collaboration with the architect, presents the work of the creator of the patio-houses and the "constructions within the landscape", the artist who combines close attention to the "settlement principle" with a focus on local architecture, through use of natural materials, transfiguring the figurative elements of classical architecture in a modern manner. Minimalism and discreet use of local materials are the essential components of the activity of Souto de Moura, leading to works that silently insert themselves in the landscape. His best known projects include: the municipal market of Braga (1980-84), the cultural center for the S.E.C. in Oporto (1981-91), the houses in Miramar (1987-91) and Alcanena (1987-92), the geology department of the University of Aveiro (1990-94), the patio houses at Matosinhos (1993-99), the Portuguese pavilion at the Hanover Expo, with A. Siza (1999). Essays by G. Leoni and A. Esposito, and an interview with A. Siza, F. Tàvora and Souto de Moura, introduce the architect's work.(extrait de electaweb.it)

This small yet densely packed and intriguingly designed guide revisits and reconsiders more than 70 built works by Eduardo Souto de Moura, selected by the architect himself. Intended as a reference book, it also shows how his architecture changes from north to south in Portugal. Each project is given with objective data as a complement to the reader’s journey, such as the circumstances of the commission, stages of the design process, simultaneous projects, contingencies of construction, and even subsequent changes to the project. The texts are based on the architect’s own writings, interviews, and lectures, thereby helping to communicate the true essence of each building.
