Abstract

Abstract

The issue of quality in interpreting has been debated for almost three decades now. This volume is evidence of the sociological turn Interpreting Studies is taking on quality research. Based on either a socio-cognitive perspective, a sociological approach, or the situational social variability of the entire source and target context, this volume's contributions analyse the respective roles of participants in a communicative event and the objective of an equivalent effect. The contributions from Europe, North America, and Australia signal a trend in the research on quality in interpreting: they challenge the concept that "sense" in a communication is a single, stable entity, and instead view it as something constructed in a common effort. This in turn highlights the interpreter's social responsibility.

Abstract

This volume provides a comprehensive overview of various Eastern European traditions of thought on the subject of translation as well as the discipline of translation studies. It sheds a light on how these traditions developed, how they are related to and how they differ from Western traditions. The volume shows nationally-framed histories of translation and translation studies and presents Eastern European pioneers and trailblazing thinkers in the discipline. This collection of articles, however, also shows that it is at times hard or even impossible to draw the line between theoretical and/or scientific thinking and pre-theoretical and/or pre-scientific thinking on translation. Furthermore, it shows that out discipline's beginnings, which are supposedly rooted in Western scholarship, may have to be rethought, and consequently, rewritten.

Abstract

Translaboration brings translation and collaboration into dialogue with one another. It theorises new forms of collaboration not only between humans, but also between humans and machines, posits the text as an actor in the translation process, and stresses the potential confluence, rather than opposition, of analogue and digital spaces. The contributors to this volume explore translaboration from a wide range of perspectives and challenge prevalent binaries such as analogue/digital, professional/non-professional, paid/voluntary, individual/collective, production/consumption, among others. Their articles shine a light on the social, political, disciplinary, and ethical implications of the power differentials at play in collaborative translation. Through the lens of translaboration, they probe what translation and collaboration are, should be, and are capable of being.

Abstract

"The contributions in this volume are a reflection of the entire range of Interpreting Studies, from explorations of research methodology and interpreting quality research to public service interpreting today and in the past, risk management strategies in court interpreting, and the interdependencies of interpreters in project networks. They address questions such as who can be called an interpreter, present new approaches to interpreter education, and discuss advances in technology, both in terms of speech-to-text interpreting and the changes that the Covid-19 pandemic has brought to the lives of interpreters. The breadth of this volume's topics reflects the oeuvre of Franz Pöchhacker, who has left his mark on Interpreting Studies over more than three decades. This tribute not only reflects the many strands of his work, but also offers new research and insights by established scholars and young researchers in the ever growing field of Interpreting Studies"--
