This is the first book in English on the major works of the German philosopher Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762-1814). It examines the transcendental theory of self and world from the writings of Fichte's most influential period (1794-1800), and considers in detail recently discovered lectures on the Foundations of Transcendental Philosophy. At the center of that body of work stands Fichte's attempt to integrate the theories of volition and cognition into a unified but complex 'system of freedom'. The focus of this book is the intricate interplay between thinking and willing in the birth of experience out of the spirit of freedom. Combining incomparable erudition, sensitive readings of some of the most difficult of philosophical texts, clarity in exposition and an acute awareness of historical context this book takes its place as the ideal introduction to Fichte's thought.

The Economic Emergence of Modern Japan is a useful book for those interested in how Japan succeeded in transforming an agricultural economy into an advanced industrial economy. This volume brings together chapters from The Cambridge History of Japan, Volumes 5 and 6, and The Cambridge Economic History of Europe, Volume 7, part 2. Each of the seven chapters, written by leading specialists in Japanese economic history, explains in an authoritative, detailed analysis how institutions, the behaviour of individuals and firms, and official policies changed in order to enable Japan to accumulate capital, adopt new technology, ensure a skilled labour-force, and increase exports of manufactured goods. The authors pay special attention to distinctive Japanese institutions and policies, the effect of the Tokugawa legacy, and the impact of various wars, and the global economy.

You Can't Get Lost in Cape Town is among the only works of fiction to explore the experience of "Coloured" citizens in apartheid-era South Africa, whose mixed heritage traps them, as Bharati Mukherjee wrote in the New York Times, "in the racial crucible of their country." Frieda Shenton, the daughter of Coloured parents in rural South Africa, is taught as a child to emulate whites: she is encouraged to learn correct English, to straighten her hair, and to do more than, as her father says, "peg out the madam's washing." While still a self-conscious and overweight adolescent, Frieda is sent away from home to be among the first to integrate a prestigious Anglican high school in Cape Town, and finds herself in a city where racial lines are so strictly drawn that it is not possible to step out of one's place. At last, Frieda flees to England, only to return more than a decade later to a South Africa now in violent rebellion against apartheid--but still, seemingly, without a place for her. It is only as Frieda finds the courage to tell her "terrible stories" that she at last begins to create her own place in a world where she has always felt herself an exile.

Which depictions of ‘distant others’ are widespread and have a strong appeal in the Global North and which are not? Who speaks on whose behalf? Who remains unrepresented? And why does it seem increasingly important and advisable to ask such questions? This sociological study analyses and discusses controversial debates surrounding epistemic, political and ethical aspects of representation in the context of knowledge production for humanitarian and academic purposes. It demonstrates how international NGOs are criticised for but also justified in using photographs that depict suffering to ask for donations, and highlights why research into, for or with marginalised individuals should be conducted in a politically and ethically responsible manner.

Hugo Zöller (1852-1933) was a German journalist and explorer who travelled to South America, West Africa and New Guinea in the course of his exciting career. This book is an account, first published in 1891, of his expedition to New Guinea in 1888, during which he became the first European to explore the island's mountainous interior. He describes the German colonial settlements on the coast, the logistical preparations for his mission, the climate, geology, flora and fauna of the island, the indigenous peoples and their customs, the local languages, to which he devotes a substantial chapter, and the hardships and highlights of the journey. The appendix contains a timeline listing European activity around New Guinea from 1526 to 1891 and a glossary in tabular form listing 300 words in 45 indigenous languages. A bibliography and index are also included, and the book contains drawings, photographs and maps.
