Abstract

The essential guide to the state of the art in WDM and its vast networking potential As a result of its huge transmission capacity and countless other advantages, fiber optics has fostered a bandwidth revolution, addressing the constantly growing demand for increased bandwidth. Within this burgeoning area, Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) has emerged as a breakthrough technology for exploiting the capacity of optical fibers. Today, WDM is deployed by many network providers for point-to-point transmission-but there is strong momentum to develop it as a full-fledged networking technology in its own right. The telecommunications industry, network service providers, and research communities worldwide are paying close attention. Optical WDM Networks presents an easy-to-follow introduction to basic concepts, key issues, effective solutions, and state-of-the-art technologies for wavelength-routed WDM networks. Responding to the need for resources focused on the networking potential of WDM, the book is organized in terms of the most important networking aspects, such as: * Network control architecture * Routing and wavelength assignment * Virtual topology design and reconfiguration * Distributed lightpath control and management * Optical-layer protection and restoration * IP over WDM * Trends for the future in optical networks Each chapter includes examples and problems that illustrate and offer practical application of concepts, as well as extensive references for further reading. This is an essential resource for professionals and students in electrical engineering, computer engineering, and computer science as well as network engineers, designers, planners, operators, and managers who seek a backbone of knowledge in optical networks.

Abstract

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed proceedings of the fourth International Conference on Ad Hoc Networks, ADHOCNETS 2012, held in Paris, France, in October 2012. The 18 revised full papers presented were carefully selected and reviewed from 43 submissions. These – and 6 invited papers now cover and even broader scope, referring to many types of autonomous wireless networks designed and deployed for a specific task or function, such as wireless sensor networks, vehicular networks, and home networks. They are organized in topical sections on MAC and PHY layers, localization and position-based protocols in WSNs, resource allocations and cognitive radio, key, service and caching management, network architectures and frameworks, and mobility and disconnection management.

Abstract

Welcome to the 24th ACM International Conference on Modelling, Analysis, and Simulation of Wireless and Mobile Systems (MSWiM). This year, MSWiM will exceptionally be held online due to the COVID- 19 situation. Over the years, MSWiM has established itself as a leading venue where some of the best research works, trends and directions in the area of modeling and performance evaluation of wireless and mobile systems are presented and discussed. The 24th MSWiM has a high-quality scientific program and two distinguished keynotes addressed by these outstanding experts: Prof. Lajos Anzo from the University of Southampton, UK; and Prof. Luis Muńoz from the Universidad de Cantabria, Spain. The winner of this year's Reginald G. Fessenden Award will be announced at the ACM MSWiM 2021 closing session. This Award has been established seven years ago and it is granted to a distinguished researcher to recognize excellence and remarkable contributions in research work in the field of Wireless Communications and Mobile Networking. Along with the main conference program, four symposia will be held: DIVANet, MobiWac, PEWASUN and Q2SWinet. These symposia have become successful and competitive in their own right, covering new research trends and visionary work within mobile and wireless systems.

Abstract

Ad hoc networks, which include a variety of autonomous networks for specific purposes, promise a broad range of civilian, commercial, and military applications. These networks were originally envisioned as collections of autonomous mobile or stationary nodes that dynamically auto-configure themselves into a wireless network without relying on any existing network infrastructure or centralized administration. With the significant advances in the last decade, the concept of ad hoc networks now covers an even broader scope, referring to the many types of autonomous wireless networks designed and deployed for a specific task or function, such as wireless sensor networks, vehicular networks, home networks, and so on. In contrast to the traditional wireless networking paradigm, such networks are all characterized by sporadic connections, highly error-prone communications, distributed autonomous operation, and fragile multi-hop relay paths. The new wireless networking paradigm necessitates reexamination of many established concepts and protocols, and calls for developing a new understanding of fundamental problems such as interference, mobility, connectivity, capacity, and security, among others. While it is essential to advance theoretical research on fundamental and practical research on efficient policies, algorithms and protocols, it is also critical to develop useful applications, experimental prototypes, and real-world deployments to achieve an immediate impact on society for the success of this wireless networking paradigm.
